it was actually quite a common practice to bind books this way throughout the 1800's and well into the early 1900's.
it's just leather after all, animal skin and like it or not that is all we are, just another mammalian species...
that being said it is entirely unsurprising that the doctor mentioned would do that and what's more i am pretty much certain that no objection would have been heard from the (incidentally mostly illiterate) public at large.

i find it really quite incredible reading through the comments at just how many people are shocked by this book.

in many of the articles i have read on the subject of leather made from humans it is said that we actually make some of the finest, most subtle and pliable leather possible.
it really isn't such a small leap to think that is because unlike, say for instance, a cow we look after our skins i mean after all when was the last time we saw a cow getting a massage with coconut oil?
except that the most common source for a human skinsuit to be used for leather making was in fact the gallows, so i doubt very much any kind of cream was ever used on those skins whilst still living...
