I appreciate how you're not showing off your skills, instead taking the time to teach the mechanics in a way that's easy to learn. Thanks.

funny thing - I use that rhythm all the time whenever I strum open chords, it just feels natural to me and so satisfying.

This is THE default strumming rhythm. Play it as fast as you can with distortion and power chords, a d-beat on the drums, and you have instant hardcore punk! Always satisfying

So far the best tutor i came across, straight to the point slow in talk, clear in explanation and very easy to understand and the demo is in slow, medium and fast phase, most importantly not winding with rubbish talks. Keep it up buddy.

I've been struggling with learning how to strum for some time now. I watched this video today during work and tried it after, when I sat down to practice. It was awkward at first, but after 30 minutes of doing this over and over, I'm actually strumming. I still miss the strings occasionally, but I'm sure that will go away with time and practice. Thank you!

I wish more people could give a guitar lesson like this..for beginners..without having to perform every riff they know..nice job, great video tomcat, love from England.

I've been calling it "controlled misses" from the straight-eight pattern (down up down up down up down up). So it ends up becoming "down -- down up -- up down --" I like the way you describe it too!

First song i ever learned was time of your life by geeen day. Very glad i picked this song. Helps your strumming. Helps pick individual strings and string skip while changing chords. Can seem daunting at the start but just keep practicing. So many times i think nah i cant do this, to then come back the next day and feel it click. Feels amazing. Dont let yourself down!

Really helpful, great sounding strum. I am starting to get it. For people like me who need to count the beats: D:1 AND D:2 U:AND (D No contact):3 AND:U D:4 AND . The up stroke with contact is always on the AND that is to say the second half of the beat, and the D with no contact on beat 3 helps you to keep the rhythm.

I am 78 & have been trying to get guitar connected for all this this time. I’ve come to know that procrastination ADHD, & advanced age are a terrible combination. The only song I recognized in this lesson was the last one but never fear I still enjoyed the lesson. ADHD MOMENT LOL ... When you’re using the guitar with the dark headstock, many times there is a reflection on it that looks like a gigantic spider ! Might want to give the headstock a once over with bug spray or hang your cables differently. Caused my old ticker to skip a beat or two ! LOL. Keep up the good work !

This is my Achilles Heel because I naturally attempt to “muscle” everything I do and like you said, it is hard to miss the strings with a stiff arm. You would think relaxing would be easy but this is going to require some “stiff” practice to be unstiff. I’ll give this technique a try since it seems to force you to relax to do it and maybe finally get over this hurdle. It’s ironic to need to focus on relaxing.

Hardest part is not making contact. Social distancing for guitar.

1. Down, 2. Down, up, 3. Up, down -- 3 days ago I just bought an electric guitar online. I don't know how to play -- TOTAL beginner here. This will be one of the first strums I try. Meanwhile, will practice on air guitar. Thanks for the great instructions. Now please teach what you did at the very end - that sounds impressive.

Wow man! God bless you man!! I have been struggling with strumming for close to a year now, I have even almost given up but just opened this video during a break from working at home and this is the best strumming technique lesson I have seen. It felt like magic man, I got it within 2 minutes. I can't thank you enough. Thank youuuu!!!!

So, this is kind of interesting. I took lessons for only a few months when I first started playing 25 years ago. Since then, I’ve just progressed by playing and figuring the vast majority of things out naturally as I went along. The interesting part is how simply playing over time will eventually bring you to the same methods! I notice this all the time when I’m watching YouTube guitar videos these days. I was never taught 80% of the techniques I use. Yet, I do use them. Pretty cool!
