Strumming patterns can be the life of a song. After all, we're all working with the same 12 chords and notes in Western music! With strums being such an important characteristic of a song, how do you find the strumming pattern so you can play along?

You make a very good point about not getting too "trapped" by the rigid "down-up-down-up" strumming motion. I've seen a lot of YT vids that kind of imply (especially for beginners) that you're not "doing it right" if you don't adhere to this pattern.

If we have a drummer, I will keep adjusting my strum pattern to fit the drumming. If no drummer then I listen to the song carefully and adjust until I think it sounds right along with the other instruments. Each song is different.

tomas - this is very helpful. i spend hours trying to figure out the strum pattern from the videos of the artist (like Peter Frampton songs). i think i waste too much time doing that. but, i like what you said - "..the essence of the groove that you can translate on your guitar"

thank you. a lot of tutorials don't provide strum pattersn that...fit. its just off somehow. half the chord charts i find don't include a strum pattern at all

Listen to the notes either going up the scale or down and the order, and sync timing while playing with the song.
