It works both ways. Lots of intelligent successful people use “dressing down” as a clever way to gauge the true character of others. Think “undercover boss” but every day of your life.

When I was thirteen my mom told me to dress up and pay attention to how we’re treated. We went shopping and to eat. The next weekend she told me to dress down not do my makeup and just look bad pay attention to how we’re treated. We went shopping and to eat. I noticed a huge difference!

I noticed this extensively but with fitness instead, getting into shape flipped how I was seen and treated socially

I like to dress nice, I like putting effort into myself, because God knows at one point I dressed like how I felt, I didn't care, I would just throw shit on, didn't care if it matched or not.

Since trying to get right with God and listening to Jordan Peterson, I've lost 80 lbs in 10 months, I've quit smoking, I started trying to make small improvements to myself.

It makes me feel good to put effort into how I look.

Because I look so amazing when I compare myself to who I was.

People certainly treat me differently when I wear a suit.

This is only a snippet of a conversation. In his book he basically says if you start dressing better and walk around looking like a confident lobster, others will take notice and treat you like someone with at least some competence. That's a start to raising your status. Of course, gradual continual improvement will eventually land you in the presence of actual competent people but you have to start somewhere.

I notice that when I wear a dress (not super fancy, just a normal outfit) or a skirt, I am more likely to have people hold doors, smile, and greet me. Men especially are more friendly.b

Jordan Peterson also gives the advice that we should make everything around us beautiful. When you feel depressed you will dress depressed when you feel great you will dress great.. sometimes when you dress great you feel great. All of this has to be taken into consideration in the context of this conversation.

Ever since I started dressing elegantly, I’ve noticed people treat me so respectfully and others just gaze at me. And I realise fewer people are asking me out, possibly because I look few steps higher my social status. Lol.

I don’t think it’s deception…I think it’s dressing the part and becoming who you want to be.

People treat you differently when you put effort into your appearance. It’s an art form.

Thats why I dress like a homeless person. No false competence signaling.

Dressing smartly is an intelligent way of putting your best foot forward to honestly seek a mate

I dress nicely because I feel better about myself when I do. It improves my confidence and self-esteem. I'm not out to decieve anyone or imply any status. It has nothing to do with any of that.

It's also a good thing. Dressing formally makes you feel powerful and gives you further confidence and a positive body image.

I want to wear a suit (or at least a suit jacket, dress shirts, and a tie) to work every day. It makes me feel better about myself.

Dress for the job ( and partner) you want, not for what you have. Dress matters. Always has and always will.

It is funny because when you are at bars and nightclubs you see people dressed incredibly well and then you talk to them and they are basically airheads

“Peacocking” is not generally about costuming oneself higher in the hierarchy, but putting youself ~outside~ of it.

I always wear a smile. People are nice to me no matter what I decide to wear ❤🕊️

That’s why I’m most comfortable in a t-shirt & jeans, hikers or sneakers on my feet. I couldn’t give a shit less what anyone thinks of me by my outward appearance. I don’t need anyone’s admiration or approval, outside of my wife and children, because that keeps me accountable.
