I like to dress nice, I like putting effort into myself, because God knows at one point I dressed like how I felt, I didn't care, I would just throw shit on, didn't care if it matched or not.

It makes me feel good to put effort into how I look.

In his book he basically says if you start dressing better and walk around looking like a confident lobster, others will take notice and treat you like someone with at least some competence. That's a start to raising your status. Of course, gradual continual improvement will eventually land you in the presence of actual competent people but you have to start somewhere.

That’s why I’m most comfortable in a t-shirt & jeans, hikers or sneakers on my feet. I couldn’t give a shit less what anyone thinks of me by my outward appearance. I don’t need anyone’s admiration or approval, outside of my wife and children, because that keeps me accountable.
