The General Electric Genesis series of locomotives has served Amtrak for over twenty years now. On this edition of Engines of Amtrak I will be discussing the history behind the current main-stay of Amtrak's roster, the P40DC, P32AC-DM, and P42DC. From intercity higher speed corridors to transcontinental long distance passenger trains, the Genesis does it all. However, a newcomer to the American rail market may threaten the careers of those units on intercity corridors. Find out more on this episode of Engines of Amtrak!

I for one would like to see your take on the F59PHI. One of the things that I have enjoyed the most about this series is seeing the differences in how we covered the F40PH and the AEM-7. You often provide a lot more detail in the specifications area than I do. And there are a number of things I left out that you could mention like the Las Vegas Talgo and other demonstration services. Plus I think it would be neat for you to have done the entirety of Amtrak's revenue service fleet. Either way, this has been a great video series and I will be sad to see it end. Great video!

The Genesis is my favorite locomotive! I miss them running on the Pere Marquette line and their K5LA’s are so amazing!

The Genesis has far more eye appeal than the Charger...not even close. I hope the Genesis stays on the long haul routes.

Y'know....for all the people calling the Chargers ugly, remember some rail buffs back in the 90's called the P42DC's ugly and favored the F40PH and P30CH's. I personally think the Chargers look fine for what they are (European style long distance passenger locomotives) and I suppose seeing how they do in the long run is all that matters to me.

10:06 The streamlined version is designated as SCB-40 (Siemens Charger Brightline rated at 4, 000 horsepower).

As far I have heard that the SC-44s are not replacing all the P42DCs that Amtrak owns. At least not yet. Right now they are only replacing them in certain Mid Western and West coast markets, and the those states DOTs are sharing the cost of buying the Chargers. Amtrak does not currently have the funds to replace their entire fleet and won't anytime soon. The P42DC will solider on for at least another decade.

3:34 that’s the only time Amtrak #819 was seen before the big bayou wreck of 1993.

I always thought it was a face that only a railfan could love, but over time I warmed up to the unique appearance! I’m hoping that 20 years from now, some museum will have a preserved and still running genesis!

You pronounced "Siemens" wrong. In German, "sie" makes a "zee" sound.
