GE “Whoop” Sound on Amtrak P42DC #train #amtrak #railroad

I was surprised to see a P42DC sitting at the Port Huron, Michigan Amtrak station so I made a brief detour to check it out. I’ll take whatever P42s I can get given Siemens Chargers are the current mainstays of the Michigan Services. Anyway, turns out AMTK 57 was laid up in the siding with a bad brake shoe according to a worker. Here’s a little clip of the iconic GE’s making their trademark “whoop” sound as the air compressor turns on.

Anyway, turns out AMTK 57 was laid up in the siding with a bad brake shoe according to a worker. Normally the Blue Water operates in a push-pull configuration with a locomotive on either end, but instead they sent it out with just 1 Charger. Pretty unusual. I'm curious if they'll tow it to Chicago for repairs or try to fix it in Port Huron. Here’s a little clip of the iconic GE’s making their trademark “whoop” sound as the air compressor turns on.

This is why we will miss the P42s, the chargers are better for the environment yes, but they will never have the same iconic and nostalgic sound of a GE chug
I say this but let’s be honest.. when the chargers are retired I, and the rest of the railfan community will find something memorable to them that we will miss and make comments like this when they are retired.

This P42 used to have a really nice NF Hybrid K5LA. It got a RL K5LA about a year ago which sucks.

57 was on the Borealis for a while but a few days ago but it was swapped due to problems with this exact locomotive

I love that sound. I’m just sad that most of the games I play with the p42 don’t have it. I also love the sound of the air compressor.

The past few years I’ve noticed the newer GE/Wabtec Gevos and rebuilds with new compressors no longer “whoop”. Bit depressing but now I am ecstatic😅 when I get somewhat older GE’s on trains.

it's kind of weird not hearing the roar of the HEP generator on these things. i rarely hear the prime mover sounds on the P42's. i've seen this unit a bunch of times since its assigned to the route that runs through my area.

I always thought this sound had something to do with a turbocharger due to the high pitched noise winding down after the "whoop"

its nice I was actually able to still see the thing in real life, and when I least expected it lol, I still think the chargers aren't bad, but they will never be as iconic and the p42's
