NASA successfully launches planetary defence test

United States space agency NASA has successfully launched a spacecraft which is designed to crash into an asteroid to succeed.
The aim is to test new defence technology designed to deflect speeding rocks which could potentially collide with Earth in the future.
This is NASA’s first attempt using the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) which launched yesterday off a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
DART is targeting an asteroid called Dimorphos, which is 160 metres across and twinned with larger asteroid Didymos.
In September of next year, DART will crash into Dimorphos to test how much the asteroids would be impacted.
The chosen asteroids do not pose any risk to Earth.
