For extra context: This is to explain my stance from something I was too afraid to talk about a year ago due to social media pressure. This is mostly to better help people understand that it's something I didn't understand the cultural dynamics of until last year. Because no one ever decided to correct me whether that be my friends, family, or internet users. I use the term New Years or Lunar New Years now of course, but I''m trying to explain it isn't really fair to harrass anyone when they're just uneducated about the topic at all and have zero clue of the sensitivity of these kinds of issues. I'm an advocate for being more educated always, but the point is I'd rather people be more patient and take the time to understand and help people BECOME educated rather than try and make them feel worse for something they weren't aware of. Chinese American here (English first language and grew up in America). My parents have always said "New Year" in Chinese and avoided saying it in English. But I've always been confused why my American classmates would always call it "Chinese New Year" instead of "Lunar New Year". It probably depends on where you live, but I always called it "Lunar New Year" because I thought that since it's the lunar calendar's new year, which is based on scientific events, it shouldn't refer to just Chinese. This was before I learned that other Asian countries also celebrated it. Nobody bats an eye when you say "Lunar" instead of "Chinese", but saying "Chinese" could genuinely hurt people. It's just the fact that fireworks and red packets have been associated with Chinese celebrations, so that's why new year started being called "Chinese".

As a Korean I sometimes get annoyed when people call it “Chinese New Year” instead of “Lunar new year” because we celebrate it traditionally too. Took me time to realize not many people know that and I learned to accept it

Vietnam is a country that treats foreigners very hospitably and kindly, especially when they show an appreciation for Vietnamese culture. The patriotism of the Vietnamese people is reflected in their culture and lifestyle, and they respect those who respect Vietnam. Regarding this Vtuber, I know what happened. The way you avoid public opinion and the responsibility of your own words. Many Vietnamese fans were willing to remind and try to help you change and show respect for Vietnam, but what you did was avoid responsibility, block them, and ignore those words. It wasn't until a year later that you spoke up, not to apologize, not to explain to your Vietnamese fans, but to point the finger at them and blame the circumstances? You said you were taught and grew up in an environment using both terms CNY and LNY, so why did you only use CNY back then? When someone pointed it out, you went silent, without any clarification or apology? You probably look down on your old fans a lot, willing to let your fanbase attack anyone with a different opinion from you =))) Good luck to you. To the fans of this Vtuber, I hope you understand that there are things that shouldn't go beyond the limit, especially when their country has a history of being continuously colonized by other major powers. Don't say we are too sensitive or overreacting, reflect on whether you are being insensitive and selfish.

Đến tận một năm sau bạn mới lên tiếng, không phải để xin lỗi, không phải để giải thích cho những fan Việt Nam, mà là để chĩa mũi dùi vào họ và đổ lỗi cho hoàn cảnh? Bạn nói bạn được dạy và lớn lên trong môi trường dùng cả 2 cụm cny và lny, vậy tại sao lúc đó bạn chỉ dùng cny? Đến khi có người nhắc thì bạn im bặt, không một lời đính chính hay xin lỗi? Chắc bạn khinh fan cũ của bạn lắm, sẵn sàng để fanbase của bạn vào tấn công bất kỳ có quan điểm khác với bạn =))) chúc bạn thành công. Về những bạn fan của Vtuber này, mong bạn hiểu có những thứ không nên đi quá giới hạn, đặc biệt khi đất nước của họ có lịch sử bị đô hộ liên tục bởi các cường quốc khác. Đừng kêu chúng tôi quá nhạy cảm hay phản ứng thái quá, xem lại các bạn có đang vô cảm và ích kỷ hay không.

ESL Chinese-ASEAN here. What we call it is nowhere near "chinese" or "lunar" new year - I don't actually know if the word we use it even have a meaning to it. I genuinely thought "chinese new year" is what that day is called in english.

Anyway, why are we expecting someone from the other side of the world (literally) to know about the problem we have with another country that is nowhere near them? I doubt you want to be held in the same standards to know every social landmine that exists in another place far from you.

Vietnamese here. It is not only us who dislike the phrase “Chinese New Year” but people in other Asian nations do too. Saying that phrase towards sea people obviously claim the event "New Year" is only for Chinese people, and people in other countries celebrating this holiday are simply followong or mimicking their tradition. Basically, New Year's Eve celebration is different between regions, it is culturally wrong to overlap Chinese culture with others'. Also, in China, people rarely use, if doesn't assume no, Chinese New Year. The more common terms are 新年快乐 (xīnnián kuàilè - Happy New Year) or 恭喜发财 (gōngxǐ fācái).

tldr: Chinese New Year is wrong and stupid since it assumes every Asian culture are similar to Chinese. Lunar New Year/ Spring Festival are more friendly and should be used more.
