Free Will is Impossible (3/3): Indeterminism and the Luck Objection

Is free will impossible? In this 3rd part of 3, I discuss premise (2) of the "free will problem" that faces libertarianism, namely, that if indeterminism is true, we don't have free will. This is followed by a brief discussion of premise (3), from which the conclusion follows that (4) there is no free will. Oh God ! Thank you so much for all of this! I didn't mean to trouble you and take your time but this was really helpful. I appreciate it so much and this will help a lot in my paper. Thank u again sir😊

Indeterminism is perhaps a stronger case against free will than determinism. I don't think uncaused events occur but either way no one is responsible for their choices.

Thanks for the video! You explained what exactly I had in mind, but in so much better way than I could ever do. Great job!

i had a good understanding of everything in the previous and it was going great. However I couldn't understand the argument in favor of premise 2. i just couldnt understand how free will is opposing indeterminism. Thank you for your videos they helped a lot. I'll try going over it again to see if i'll get it this time

Free will, defined as the capacity to choose between alternatives is obviously erroneous. If I select X over Y, it's because I had a desire to do so, as we only actualize potencies insofar as we desire to actualize them, otherwise there is nothing to account for why we actualize anything. Since we only actualize based upon our desire, we cannot choose to do otherwise, as our desire is inevitably going to be one way, entailing only one effect can proceed from my desire, I can't choose to do otherwise, as this is tantamount to positing I can desire otherwise, and our desire is outside the boundaries of our volition, so to conclude we can not select between alternatives, we can only do what we want, but defining free will as that what you want, is the perfect and concise definition of free will, as you are exercising your desire and doing what you want.

Good video.

Now let's see what happens if I tell you that the audio quality is terrible and you should probably upgrade your software/hardware.

What if agent causal determinism is true and he decides to pull the trigger despite coming to the conclusion that he ought not to? If this is the case, then instead of randomness being the cause of his actions, it is his volition, which uses reason as a tool to make a decision, but is not subjugated by it and can decide to override it.

I suppose in arguing against this, one could resort back to his volition being essentially programmed into him by his genetics and environment. Thus, he is not responsible for his volition, and still has no free will. 😢

Could do without the dramatic music. Maybe something more layed back. It feels like i am watching a 9/11 conspiracy video.

The volume is way too low. I can't watch this because it's too low.

Terrible audio. Unnecessary, distracting sounds and music. That is a real pity.

Free will is a scientific fact. Deal with it.
