My guy couldn't calculate what he wanted to calculate, so he casually proceeded to discover the math required to calculate what he wanted to calculate (calculus). Absolute genius.

Footnote: Many people in the replies are pointing out the contribution of Leibniz but framing it as Newton "stealing" his work. I'd like to clarify to them that Newton's Calculus and Leibniz's calculus were developed with different approaches. It's a bit lengthy to explain here but basically:

Newton's calculus was founded on geometric principles and he used the concepts of fluxions and fluents. Leibniz's approach, however, was based on infinitesimal quantities, dealing with infinitesimally small differences. That is why most historians agree that regardless of prior accusations, the two men most likely invented calculus independently.

The more you learn about Newton the more you realize the guy is second to none.

The fact that he invented Calculus for carrying out calculations of his theory is insane

Newton was one of my students. I m so proud of him. He exceeded my expectations.

Newton gave laws of motion, gravity, calculus, mathod to approximate value of pi, color theory and this list goes on and on. He wasnt just smart he was true genius.

Modern Person in a pandemic: chilling, eating and watching TV

Newton during a pandemic/ epidemic: chilling, eating, inventing calculus independently and fixing the pascal triangle with fractions and negative numbers.

Newton was truly ahead of his time

When I teach physics I always tell my students about Newton, and I say that to me he is the most brilliant scientist. His work was GROUNDBREAKING!

You go into Physics, there is Newton
You go into Maths, there is Newton
You go into CS, there is Newton
You go into Engineering, there is Newton

He is everywhere

It’s a disservice to say there were no giants before newton

The thing is, Einstein had a foundation to work with and was taught his life about, yet he came up with something so brilliant and complex that he invented new maths and physics so abstract that 100 years later, people still don't get everything in his papers. I'd put Einstein at 1, but I understand why people put Newton above him. But either way, both are peak examples of brilliant scientists.

We're now debating the GOAT of Physics I see. 😂

Newton INVENTED CALCULUS. Wrap that around your heads. Dude was an absolute genius.

As a science enthusiast. Newton truly revolutionalised the (modern) science. Its a joy studying Newton & Tesla. My only sadness is that i can NEVER know what information was erased when the Naalanda university was destroyed.

It is an overstatement that he has no giant shoulders to step on. There were anciant greeks, medieval Islamic Mathematicians like Alhazan and omar khayyam. Then European Renaissance Mathematicians. Nothing comes out out of nowhere. He himself admitted and he wasn't just being humble. He just admitted the contribution.

How did Moses know that nothing was holding up the earth and how did Isaiah know that the earth was a sphere/round? 2000 years before Newton.

Before Newton, no one had demonstrated conclusively that the movements of heavenly bodies were related to terrestrial physics.

Imagine yourself in the 17th century, simply watching an apple fall from a tree. In that moment, your mind sparks with profound questions. Yet, as you explore these ideas, you realize there's no existing math to grasp the concepts your mind is conjuring. So, you set out to invent the mathematics needed to make sense of your own thought and catch up to your own mind. Essentially, Newton was an innovator far beyond his time.

😂 Eratosthenis, Aristarchus, Pythagoras etc. These are the giants Newton himself speak of. They lived 2000 years before him. Eratosthenis calculated the circumference of earth with a difference of 75km only .

Dude is like the guy who invented eyeglasses just to see what he could not see. Metal af.

No he is wrong there are many people who knew the basic science even the gravity and stuffs like that like Ibn al-Haytham, Aristotle and Archimedes
Special AL HAYTHAM was muslim and was a medieval mathematician, astronomer, and physicist of the Islamic Golden Age from present-day Iraq. Referred to as "the father of modern optics", he made significant contributions to the principles of optics and visual perception in particular
so if you want find search them
