Storing Rice Long Term Food Storage

Rice is the number two most consumed staple in the world. Its versatility and inherent long shelf life are a large part of why this is the case.
Rice can be used for human or animal consumption, so having a good stock of it is important for emergencies.

Just want to say THANK YOU. I finally broke open my 23 qt Presto and today I canned 14 pints of ground beef and nothing blew up! I did a test run with water. I had browned the meat last night (about 13 lbs) so I did everything cold/cool. All my lids have pinged. I may be hooked! Don’t think I would have tried it without your video and discussions on canning. Yay! Gonna dig out all my frozen meat and get it canned.

This is a great video. We are rice eaters and I do store it using mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. I find if you are a white rice eater the 1 gal mylar bags are great for storage and can fit 5 in a 5 gal bucket easily. 1 gal bag holds about 5 lbs of rice nicely. If you use a 5 gal mylar bag it will hold 35 lbs of white rice in a 5 gal bucket.

Tip: if you want smaller portions in the mylar bags; simply cut the gallon sized bags in half, seal one end, fill, seal the other end. This way you get 1/2 gallon of rice (or whatever you are storing) in a bag instead of opening a whole gallon bag.

I set up some rice for long-term storage last year, about 25lbs. I did the whole shebang. I put it in the freezer for 4 days, pulled them out, loaded mylar bags with oxygen absorbers, and THEN putting it in a bucket with a tight lid. PRO TIP: Use a flat iron (or hair) to seal your mylar bags. If you open one and don't need all the contents, you can cut off the top (that was sealed before), drop in some fresh absorbers, and reseal with the flat iron. So much easier than a clothes iron!

A great convenient way to store rice is by cooking it then double bagging it. I put some in zip lock sandwich bags, flatten them seal tightly. Then stack as many as possible in a freezer bag seal tightly and freeze. The rice lasts for years. Tastes like freshly cooked. That method minus flattening works for donuts and French toast too.

I have been storing rice since 1999. I started by putting it in #10 cans from the LDS cannery with O2 absorbers. Then years later with mylar bags and O2 absorbers . Now I put in glass jars. I wouldn't be without it. Thanks for a great video.

I keep a couple of quart jars just vacuum sealed in my working pantry.. and I have it stored in quart mylar bags with OAs and in a 5 gallon bucket in a 5 gallon mylar bag with 2000cc OAs for really long term. Great video as Always Leisa. Everyone stay safe and God Bless you and your family from middle GA 🙏 Kendra... KEEP PREPPING PEOPLE 🥰🥰💯

Parboiled rice Compared to white rice, parboiled rice has fewer calories, fewer carbohydrates, more fiber, and more protein. This makes it a healthier alternative to traditional white rice.

I am also diabetic, it has Reduced Diabetes Symptoms

Studies suggest that, in comparison to both white rice and brown rice, parboiled rice has a lower impact on blood sugar levels, making it a safer choice for people with diabetes than other rice's. This may be especially true if you refrigerate leftover parboiled rice and then eat the leftovers, as storing parboiled rice in cold temperatures may further reduce the impact it has on your blood sugar levels.

I have a test bucket of basmati rice I’ve kept in a plain ole Walmart bucket with lid for over 10 years. No oxygen absorbers, mylar, nothing. Recently made a batch and it was delicious 😋. I will never again waste money on mylar or oxygen absorbers for rice. It was stored in a climate controlled pantry about 70 degrees farenheit the whole time.

I've been storing my rice with a small sprinkling of food grade DE in the bottom of my jars, because I don't want to have to put it in the freezer - learned this from Hodgepodge Homestead.

I don’t eat much white rice myself but I hadn’t thought about using white rice for pet food in an emergency. I hadn’t figured out how to have pet food worked into my long term preps, great idea and now I have a new project to research and store!

Store what you eat and eat what you store. Good advice.

I make up 2 cup packs and then mylar bag them. For a family of 2 to 3, 2 cups is more than enough.
I also make up packs of 2 cups rice, 1 cup of red beans and all the dry ingredients for meatless red beans and rice. Great go to for camping, hiking or using in the semi like I do.
Great video Ms Leisa as always!

Nice analysis that recognizes the different types of rice need different storage. My brown rice lives in the freezer. Lol, I prefer sticky rice. Short-grain is my friend.

I just did this same thing!😊. My family loves rice so I’ve stored quite a bit. Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers are amazing! 👍🏻

I have been vacuum sealing rice in 1 lb bags for years. Never had an issue. I have some vacuum sealed for over two years and it is still good. I only use Jasmine rice. To keep rice from being sticky just rinse it two or three times in cool water. Put in cool water and mix around, pour off cloudy water and repeat. Never a problem. I only cook rice in a rice cooker.

I enjoy a variety of rices, most of what I store for long term is the standard white rice but I store other rices like basmatti and jasmine. I fill mylar bags no bigger then one gallon since I'm prepping mainly for me and the cat. I use oxygen absorbers in alk my bags and moisture absorbers in the buckets between the bags. I do have some brown but that is mostly my "user" rice

You can use white rice to make rice flour which you can use for firing food and baking.

Good advice, Leisa. You got me curious about what would be the #1 consumed food . I would have bet it was beans but I would've lost that bet. It's pasta!! Just thought you might be interested in that fact.
