When it comes to advances in golf clubs over the last couple of decades it is difficult to think of many more transformative things for regular amateurs than the almost mass adoption of hybrid clubs.

And with every new club type questions inevitably follow as to how far you should hit them?

So in this video we:
1. Take a look at the best available stats out there to answer the question of how far you should your hybrids focusing on the most commonly used 2, 3 and 4 hyrbids
2. Analyse the average distances various categories of handicapped golfers hit them, and
3. Compare them where possible to the average distances of the long irons they are meant to replace

I just got the new ping g430 6h at 30 degrees and today I averaged 195 with a range of 188-205 using arccos. I just bumped it to 31.5 degree and will test again as I don’t want my 6h going that far. I also just got a 5h, 4H, and 3h. I have hit the 4H and 6h and they are easy to hit and have great ball flight. I am a 13.8 hcp. My hybrids are the Ping g430, g425, stealth 2 HD.

The one thing missing (distance) is the diff between dry & sodden fairways, it can be anything up to 3 clubs, no roll, cold moist air etc wet green blah blah. i really struggle in winter with no roll often the ball pugs out of sight. Which causes one to try hitting the cursed wee spherical heathen harder! with bad results.

I subbed because of this series of videos. Number one lessen an amateur should learn is leave your ego in the car.

That Arccos hybrid data must include all the duffs&tops, (women also?) me as a high handicapper and short hitter can reach 200yd with solid 4 hybrid shot, 220 on 3.

I must be a huge outlier almost 60yrs old (xmas).
my arccos data shows my 3h distance avg 215m. range page shows193-234m. Longest 263m was downwind winter storms wind 25-30kts on down slope played on 506m par 5 airmailed green by 30m driver +3h.
into wind shots last round 10-15kts fairway/1st cut actuals 184m and 193m.

Ping g425 with ping tour 85g shaft X flex. Fitting swing speed trackman 4 was avg 103mph for 3h.
Golf Aust hcp 29.1 reducing every comp round on last 7 rounds except 1 played in heavy winter rain.( Aust). i

In every stat group i am major outlier except Vs tour pga stats where my irons slightly short 5m or so have actual data to support. Have my own dist (carry) chart after a full bag gapping session also trackman 4. Use pga carry stat as back green best hit if damage beyond otherwise use my carry dist to green as have spin to hold. any other is useless info to compare to. Must trust my spe ific scwnario and data.
Been back into golf for 20mths after 17 years away. last time with official hcp was back in 80's was circa 23-25. Played with regular shafts and couldn't keep on fairway though long even with wooden driver etc. Uni student back then so not easy just get new clubs. played with what I had. On the path to find the best i can be at golf. Trust in your own data and learn from it.
Ps I am an engineer

It would be useful to have standard deviations on the graphs 📈

There must be selection bias here. I assume players with more club speed (at all handicaps) are more likely to use irons

It doesn't look like there is very much difference in hitting a hybrid vs a 6 or 7 iron for a higher handicapper. What would the benefit be, if any? I'm in the 15-20 group, I hit my 34 degree 7 iron around 150. Is a 2 hybrid easier to hit than a 7 iron?

Sadly, the hybrid is consistently the worst club in my bag, probably about 1 in 20 solid, the rest fat / thin / pull / slice, and even when hit reasonably solid, no elevation. I hate my hybrid, but have no other options.
