something that I found that helps, is after you are good with comma splices, I recommend learning about semi colon if you have not already, semi colon is much easier to learn if you know comma splice

I have a question.
What if I have a sentence like this: "It was so cold that evening [ ] he caught a cold and had to take day off". I'm used to leave the entire sentence the way it is now, but is it a mistake?
