Run-ons and comma splices | Syntax | Khan Academy

Keep going! Check out the next lesson and practice what you’re learning:

A run-on sentence doesn’t separate any of its independent clauses with the punctuation that it needs, and a comma splice incorrectly separates two independent clauses with a comma, instead of a comma-and-coordinating-conjunction.

Syntax on Khan Academy: Syntax is the ordering of language; it’s the study of how sentences work. In this section, we’ll scratch the surface of syntax as it applies to English grammar. Much more can be said about this subject, but we’ll save that for KA Linguistics.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything

I love how David makes all these little jokes here and there to keep the learners brain active, normally a teacher just tells them how it works and all that stuff then the learner's brain loses interest but with all the little jokes David puts in your brain stays active and entertained and they are just nice, fun and you remember more because you don't fall asleep while watching the videos.

For everybody saying, "How does he write so fast, " he wrote everything out, sped up the video, and then voice recorded over it.

My teachers always said I was using run-ons and comma splices when I had dependent clauses in my sentences. They should seriously replace school with these videos.

I see the comma splice in professionally produced media all the time. Off the top of my head, virtually every loading screen in Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2. A nitpick, to be sure, but consistently drives me insane.

Do you always put a comma before the word 'and' or is it always expected? Because I've seen both before.

I admit that I've made similar mistakes to these, but thanks for clarifying!
