Learned Helplessness Experiment | Martin Seligman | Cognitive Dissonance Experiment | Online Docs

In 1965, Martin Seligman conducted an experiment to study the effects of control and learned helplessness using dogs as subjects. The experiment involved placing dogs in a box divided by a low barrier where they would be subjected to painful shocks. The dogs were able to escape the shocks by jumping over the barrier. However, Seligman then harnessed some of the dogs, making them unable to escape from the shocks. The following day, when these same dogs were placed back in the box individually, they did not try to escape even though it was possible for them to do so. This experiment showed that the dogs had learned to feel helpless and had given up trying to escape the shocks. The experiment faced ethical concerns and criticism for its treatment of the animals.

This video totally misses the point. The point about the experiment is that it reveals, if society is randomly “shocked” for long enough by a nefarious government, it will eventually succumb. That is the more concerning take home lesson.

I tried to find the footage of the original experiment and could not find it. Has it been erased from our view? There is an inherent danger in doing this. Sometimes truth is painful, but some level of pain is necessary in life. These lessons need to be remembered... not erased from collective memory.
