“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

Philippians 4:8

I used to watch a lot of horror films, but I quit because suddenly my mind was so full of darkness that's all I was thinking about. It drove me nuts, even away from God at times...but I came back to Him, and I'm truly grateful for His love and grace.

"It amazes me that people would get involved with the occult, yet say there's no God." Very well put. I believe deep down that everybody, including the most heart-hardened atheist, believe in God. They're just in rebellion of Him. God's laws were written on our hearts, so we know He's there and therefore have no excuse come Judgement Day.

Story time: Back in about 1998, my wife (at the time) and I were living with her parents for a few months until our house was ready. At the time, I was working at a video store and brought home the movie "Fallen." I put the movie on to watch it, and I remember almost immediately, my wife exited the room. I could sense that she was nervous and didn't want to watch it. I figured whatever, I'll watch it. Well, almost immediately, I could feel the Holy Spirit in me telling me to turn it off. At first I figured that it was just me being scared or nervous. After several minutes of feeling this, I could sense the Holy Spirit getting more and more upset at me to the point that I couldn't justify the feeling away, I knew that God was trying to get my attention. The next day, my wife called me at work to ask me a question, and she mentioned that she felt weird about that movie. I told her that I took it back to the video store and not to worry. Later that night as we were lying in bed. I could immediately sense that something demonic was in the room. I laid there trying to ignore it, but then the feeling got worse. I could then sense that this evil spirit was in the wall and that it was staring at me specifically. I rolled over after a few minutes and asked my wife if she too could sense that and she immediately said YES. I told her to get up, and I grabbed the anointing oil, and I prayed with my wife and repented for bringing that movie into the house and inviting that spirit in. I rebuked it, anointed the walls with oil, and asked God to forgive me and protect us. That evil spirit left, and never came back. But I learned a valuable lesson. Don't invite Satan or demons around by watching those movies. You're opening a door to the demonic and trust me, you dont want to have to be dealing with that, especially if you dont know how to or how to use the authority that Christ has given us, and ultimately, you dont want to grieve the Holy Spirit by subjecting Him to that kind of garbage.

Personally I don't think Christians should watch horror paranormal or occult type movies or listen to that type of music. It opens avenues of the mind that should remain closed...

Other than the obvious cases where something is especially profane or demonic and should be avoided, I think that this is where discernment comes into play, which is something you develop as you mature as a Christian. As you mature, you become more attuned to the Holy Spirit stirring your soul when something is not good for you, and then it is up to you whether you submit to the counsel of the Spirit or ignore it. There are very few scary movies/shows I watch due to this, though I do have a handful I feel are okay for me to watch. It’s going to be different for everyone, same as if it were something like drinking alcohol where some people are okay imbibing and others will not. I appreciate Dr. Turek’s wise and thoughtful approach to everything through the lens of a biblical worldview!

Edit to clarify: I’m talking about watching those things, not participating in occult activities. I think the Bible is very clear that we are not to do those things.

I once sat down in the middle of a summer day to watch Hereditary, thinking it would be a thriller-type movie based on the trailer. I assumed it had something to do with a link between the girl and the grandmother as portrayed in the trailer.

Up until the last 30 minutes or so, the movie kept me guessing, albeit with a lot of skepticism when the plot began involving a seance to speak to a dead character. I was back on my heels, but wanted to finish what I started considering the movie was fairly unpredictable up to that point.

But during the last half-hour, the plot took a nosedive right into the cliche demon possession, even invoking the name of a "king of hell". I went outside immediately after the movie concluded and angrily mowed my lawn, having regretted wasting my time on something so disappointing, but more importantly--angry that this movie invoked demonic names & presence within my own house. I simply don't watch scary movies anymore. They all tamper with forces beyond any man's control.

All I watch are horror movies pretty much and I’ve been born again for 25 years. It’s not what goes into a person that defiles them but what comes out of their heart in the form of words and actions that defiles them.

I love scary movies, but I don’t over indulge because I don’t want to saturate my mind with negative thoughts. Balance, I suppose

I spent most of my life unsaved and riddled with demons. I was saved a few years ago, was freed from them, and after watching a few horror movies I turned that crap off. I simply cannot go back to allowing the ones who tormented me for 3 decades back in my life, even if what's on screen is just "acting". God is real, so Jesus is real. Jesus is real, so Satan and demons are real. In that case, I hate Satan and demons with every fiber of my being. Too many directors/actors are playing with fire. Too many are under the same influences I was under. I'm done. As for me and my house, we will worship the Lord.

If horror movies were truly evil they would depict the demons as the good forces. The very fact that they’re portrayed negatively, kind of proves the point

God: holy. Demonic movies: unholy. Pretty clear cut.

Nefarious was an excellent movie about the paranormal that all Christians (teens or older) should consider watching! 🎥 🍿🥤

It depends; for instance the book Dracula has a lot of Christian references and in the end good triumphs. But I would say most horror movies from the 1960s and onwards should be avoided.

Those movies often reveal a LOT of truth, for example they often portray the demons masquerading as a deceased loved one, truth in plain sight.

Most horror movies aren't good for the mind. Only a few are constructive

Phillipians 4:8

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:2

Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. Col 3:1-2

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. Php 4:8

One stark undeniable issue with probably every scary movie is the fact that they depict the demons to be ones to be feared of, when actually God is to be feared of, above all. I believe that fear of demons is an insult to God.

The title should have been "Does demonic realm exist in the present world" may be an apt one..

Old pre-1965 movies frequently had a Christian worldview. Messing with supernatural things was not a good idea and good won out over evil. Look at Dracula or any of the old vampire movies. The vampires always lost in the end, usually destroyed by Christian symbols like the cross. Today's movies have the vampire as the hero--someone to be admired and emulated.
