1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 Cobra Jet 428 Muscle Car Of The Week Video #37

In 1969, you could walk in to your local Mercury dealer and rumble out behind the wheel of a Cougar XR7 Cobra Jet 428 and win street races without attracting the attention of the local fuzz. The '69 XR7 CJ428 is a 335 HP / 440 TQ tire-burner with subtle European design flair. The Brothers Collection is home to many bright and loud Muscle Cars, but this one is an example of speaking softly and carrying a big V8!

I had the exact same cougar. One correction, however. If you ordered the CJ428 with ram air, AC was not available because it would not fit. I paid $3920 for this beautiful car.

makes one wonder, The Jaguar XJS is reminiscent of the XR7 Cougar interior and the rear window swept back buttress like the GTO models.

I have a 70 Cougar XR7 428 4 speed that I bought brand new. I knew the day I brought it home that I'd never sell it. It has 32000 miles and is all original except for the 15 inch wheels. It is a one of one XR7 with a 428 4 speed, black with white leather interior. I wish it had the hood scoop but the dealer didn't have any pictures of it and I didn't want a shaker scoop. That's what the pony's had and I hated the looks of them. They are great cars and very under rated. Like the T shirt says, " It's like a Mustang, only better."

I have a 1969 XR 7 Convertible Red with Black Top and Black Leather interior I am restoring now. I also have a 1967 Cougar Dan Gurney Special two tone (Blue with white top) that I have owned for twenty years, and drive all the time in the summer. I love these early Cougars, and always get a thumbs up when driving my 67. Cant wait to get the 69 back, and on the road.

Ha! That's funny... I don't think you would, "glide in under the radar", in this car!

1969 XR7 is the best design. Love these lines. Eliminators are really badass but not so refined. And if you ge the upgraded handling package these care were really fin on country roads.

To me the nicest musclecar or ponycar interior of them all

Love the Cougars. They're tied with Challengers/Cudas as the best looking in the era, IMO. Mustang platform, but a more grown up, upscale feel.

A+ I always thought in the 67 to 70 era Cougars were sharp looking cars. better looking than the mustangs.

There`s a man here in northeast, ohio that has a 69 with the 428.It has what appears to be a factory rear spoiler and it is bright yellow and black...he has had it since way back when and it sounds great, , , have never seen another one like it

My room mate on my first long-term job had a Cougar with the 289 and an automatic. I really liked the handling and the revs that the 289 would quickly climb up to. I always liked the interiors when compared to a sweet ride.
