1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 428 CJ Convertible: Muscle Car Of The Week Episode 267

Mercury's know how to have fun too, and this 1969 428 Cobra Jet Cougar XR7 convertible leads the pack. Just over 4000 ‘69 XR7 convertibles were built, far fewer with the Ram Air 428 CJ under the hood, and this is a sweet one from The Brothers Collection.

The bosses' wife had the near-identical car back in the '80s, the very first 428 CJ I ever drove. I was ruined by that car, Ford guy ever since. Hers was the same year and color, same options except tilt wheel, but was a hardtop with white vinyl and a factory sunroof. What a great car, a 428 CJ/automatic with 3.00 or 3.50 gears was one of the '60s best burnout machines. No brake standing necessary; just point, floor it, and light the tires for a block and a half. Brutal!

amazing car, reminds me of my 69 XR-7 convertible, mine was a 351 4barrel, even had the same hood stripe, (mine of coarse said 351). it was lite Met. Blue, white convt. top dark blue leather interior, it was pretty quick!!! at least it was to a 17yr old, WAY back in the day!!

Want to know if it's true that the rear sequential tailights were control by a mecanical motor in place of an electronic solid state circuit ? Incredible for the year the man landed on the moon do you think .

3:03 OPEN DIFF ? Really ? I thought this thing was loaded mechanically . . . as in standard diff locker or LSD. Go figure . . . (O _ O )'

Correction TRACK not plural as in one wheel peel .please tell me I’m wrong .

The engine was underrated a bit but revving one past 5k was pointless. As for tach not having a redline, the engine stops making power even before hitting valve float around 5800.

Ford really restricted the power of their passenger cars from the factory. A 428 Cobra Jet with only a 735 cfm carb??? C'mon man. I'd pull that thing off the day I bought it along with the restrictive exhaust manifold and bolt on a 780-800 cfm Holley and a set of headers. And better tires as well

Great car; Do you people know that NHRA has completely eliminated Mercury from the stock and super stock racing programs !!! Cars like this can no longer compete at NHRA events !!!
