After the fall of the Roman Empire, concrete technology was lost until John Smeaton started rebuilding the lighthouse. Eddystone lighthouse was located near Cornwall, England for 120 years. John Smeaton required a binding material that could cure in wet conditions, and invented hydraulic lime.
Consequently, and as a testament to the lasting strength of Smeaton's invention, the base of his tower remains undisturbed as a monument to his contribution.
