I have a 2013 Accord Exl V6. I bought it in 2018 with 40, 000 miles and it has had this starter issue the entire time where it would just grind and not start until the 2nd or 3rd try most times. I just finished doing this service bulletin without replacing the starter because I figured if the starter I have still starts the car it can’t be too bad. It now starts up like it’s brand new!! I followed all of your advice in this video and I couldn’t thank you enough!!

My 2014 Accord coupe V6 had the same issue, so I decided to remove and bench-test the starter motor and found the built-in solenoid of the starter sometimes launches short and spins free preventing engagement of the flywheel.
I did some research on YouTube and found a video in which the mechanic decided to use a starter from a previous generation that had an external solenoid. A small modification was necessary to accommodate the starter with the mounted solenoid. I have followed that method and it was 100% successful without having to do the flywheel rotation procedure.

Thanks so much for this video! I have a ‘15 V6 and this start grinding issue started in ‘18. I’ve replace the starter twice and in 2020 I found out that it was the flex plate, went to Honda and told them the issue very descriptively and they didn’t even check and TSBs (they could have but maybe they just wanted to charge me more for the fix) They then quoted me $4000 for the labor and part, $1000 for flex plate (!) and $3000 for labor since they had to drop the tranny. I left.

Got another quote from Pep Boys for $2000, that was a lot better. Just didn’t feel right even paying that much. So three years later of intermittent starting I randomly googled Accord Flex plate and your video came up. I was super excited so today I went and jacked up the car and did exactly what you did from the TSB (only the rotation of the torque converter and flex plate, but not the gasket or starter since there’s a newish one in there)

Before this fix it would start sometimes 5 times in a row, then intermittently grind and not start, often it would take 5 or more start grinds/tries for it to fire up.

Since rotating the flex plate/torque converter I’ve started it 25 times without fail today (which is a big indicator that it worked). So overall this worked for me extremely well, thanks again! I’ll try and update over the next month or so.

2013 Honda Crosstour 70k miles, did the sdjustment and left the starter stock, works great now!

Also aftermarket starters will cause this even after rotating the flex plate as well. So highly recommend oem starter as well.

My 2014 Crosstour EXL V6 has been doing this for years. I bought used with 95k in 2018 and it now has over 170k and I never addressed the issue. I said I would wait until I got stranded but so far it hasn't happened. Thinking of crawling under there and finally doing it. I'll share my results here. Thank you!

I'm surprised this is just a TSB and not a recall, given the transmission is involved, and you can only do it once. Seems like that would be a design flaw IMHO?

Any idea how much the "next step" would cost (i.e. - replacing the torque convertor inside the transmission)? is that just a part replacement, or considered a transmission rebuild? like thousands of dollars probably?

Also I noticed it was only for V6 engines, but I have these exact same issues you are describing in my 4 Cyl. 2014 Honda Accord... :(

I have a 2015 accord v6. Used an aftermarket starter and same issue even with the Honda torque bolt fix. Then did a Honda starter and the issue still there. Just living with it now but it's getting worse. Use to only be about 3 starts then fine now it happen 6 to 10 times before it turns over. Honda lost me with this issue.

I have a 2014 4 cylinder that's having starting issues but from what I've seen they only have a bulletin for the v6. Do you have any info on these?

Does this repair also work on the 2015 4cyl EX-L coupe?

I'm having starter problems as my 2013 V6 Honda accord starts sometimes and then other times it doesn't. I'm not experiencing the "grinding" noise but should I still rotate the torque converter or leave well enough alone?

After I did this tsb, my car 2014 v6 started fine the first couple of times but now it just clicks. What should I do?

Hi! Why would I need to replace the started if the starter is spinning but not engaging? From what it sounds like, I just need to replace the gasket and rotate the torque converter. What's your thoughts? The vehicle only has 47K.

Will this fix the 4cly grinding at start problem or v6 only ?
