Starter problems and warning signs your Honda starter motor is Failing! ... that engine starter has a problem. Many people have reported this starter engine issue in newer Honda vehicles like Accord, Civic, CRV, Fit, Odyssey, Pilot event at low miles. Honda CRV starter issues are well documented for years, and new now there are HRV starter problems!

Cost To Replace Starter Motor:
* Honda accord start motor: about $800 (parts + labor)
* see my video below on DIY starter replacement

VIDEOS THAT MAY HELP:

BATTERY PROBLEM Vs. STARTER PROBLEM:
When the battery is bad/going bad the vehicle has power but it is not enough to fully start the vehicle. Therefore, when we try to start the vehicle the lights on the dash / instrument panel / gauges will flicker, or in other words car cranks but wont start (cranks but no start). And if we switch-on the headlights they will be dim / will have lower power and if we try to start vehicle with headlights on the headlights will flicker while vehicle is trying to start. Engine cranks but does not start vehicle... and all along you can hear the starter trying to start vehicle.

SIGNS OF A STARTER GOING BAD:
Symptoms of a bad starter are easy to identify. When the starting motor or engine starter motor is going bad and we try to start the vehicle, the lights on the instrument gauge / dash will not flicker, the starter will simply not even try to start the vehicle. In other words, no crank no start. If this happens, turn the key to off and then on and try to start vehicle and make sure the brake paddle is pressed. After a few tries the vehicle will start. These starter problem symptoms get worse quick.

REASON FOR BAD STARTER?
Starter solenoid of an automobile starter degrades over time. Once the starter engine develops the issue, the problem will get worse quickly and will eventually leave you stranded. It is time to find out cost to replace starter motor or rebuild starter motor. See details in video linked above:

IF YOU ARE STRANDED DUE TO STARTER PROBLEM:
*** Find starter under vehicle, bang on it with wrench ***
How?
* Lift vehicle on scissor/jack on the driver side wheel
* Take spare wheel from trunk, place under driver wheel
* Take metal wrench meant for opening wheel lug nuts
* Take floor mat from car, place under vehicle engine
* Lay down on the floor mat under car engine
* Find starter under vehicle, bang on it with wrench
* Do this a few times and then start vehicle
* When vehicle starts, do not turn it off!

STARTER ISSUE IN MY 2013 HONDA ACCORD LX
My 2013 Accord LX 4 cylinder started having issues with engine starting around 110K miles when *sometimes* car would take more than a few attempts to start and other times it started just fine on first attempt. The no crank no start situation got worse over time and by 115K miles it was a full blown issue and often the car wouldn't start on first attempt - the starter wouldn't crank / engage at all until several tires thats when I started recording the issue and knew I needed a new starter soon. Starter motor price depends on whether we buy a reconditioned starter motor, or an OEM (new or used).

One click is the key. Just changed my starter after weeks of stress of intermittent start ups. 160k miles 2014 accord

It could be the starter relay instead of the starter itself. It's easier and cheaper to replace the relay than the starter. If car can't start and you jump start the car and it starts that means the starter relay is bad, not the starter. If the starter is bad, no matter what you do, the car won't start.

Everyone with this issue should have the battery and alternator checked. If the starter is not making any strange noises, replace the BATTERY MONITOR SENSOR. On my 2014 Accord it located on the battery ground and is about $40 on Amazon. This thing controls the push button start, alternator, starter and battery. It takes about 5 minutes and a 10mm socket.

thank you for your feedback. It has 88, 000 miles on it not too high. I have to turn the key three times pull the key out of the ignition and then turn the key real far forward to get it to start. And then it will eventually start. I will keep an eye on all of these things you told me, thank you!

Thanks for this. Having the same problem. lights work, no sound from the starter. Was told at a shop to replace the spark plugs, after doing that I'm still having the same problem, looks like the starter is next.

Thanks for the vid. This is exactly what I'm seeing. Just had my alternator replaced a few months ago and I suspected the starter was also wearing out and now am having trouble turning over. Getting it checked out tmrw

My 206 CRV developed no start problem at 51K miles. Replacement of starter solves the problem. The replacement cost is $650 with re manufactured Honda starter . My 2004 accord starter failed at 150K miles and 2008 CRV starter failed at 100K miles.

I have a 2015 Honda accord its been doing this for 2 years😂. I got used to it already i turn the key about 15 times and it turns ON. The funny thing is im a tech, and i used to work for a company that rebuilt starters and alternators lol.

1. Yes starter is good the solenoid is not kicking in.

2. The previous owner used and abused that ignition switch and the key is really worn out. Might have to get a new key made.

I am going to pull the starter and check the armature and bushings they wear out with time. Less then $10 can give you another lifetime starter if you know how to do it. Im sure its the solenoid though. It just happens with time all those bumps and holes whe go through the road and with the years the parts get loosy from inside.

170k on my Odyssey doing the same thing intermittently. Not surprised because the alternator also went out recently. Just natural these would fail after so many miles and years.

My 2019 civic is getting a new starter at 77k miles. Similar issues, new battery, acts like it's dead but it turns out it was the starter.

When you hit about 100, 000 miles, your valves will be out of adjustment and that's why Honda engines are harder to start. In the 2.4 engine, for example, the intake valves will be slightly loose an the exhaust valves will be slightly too tight.

Loose valves make your engine a bit noisy, and tight valves make it harder to crank the engine.

Removing the valve cover and readjusting the valves takes about an hour to do and isn't hard to accomplish if you have a socket set and a tappet feeler gauge (available at most auto parts businesses).

Would dying and coming back on also be a starter problem? Battery and alternator brand new

I’m having issues leaving car overnight then trying to start in the morning. It feels like the battery but I don’t think it is. After a couple tries it starts up but I also press the gas probably not ideal but that’s how I get it to not do that. I might change the relay instead of the starter because it’s a huge project to change

My engine starter makes grinding noise but then it starts ???
Could it be a bad fuse ?
Or is it because i install a aftermarket car audio amplifier and subwoofer???
I have a Honda accord V6 2017 sedan

I have 2012 Honda Civic With a key, also have remote viper system, which sometimes overrides the hard key lately, when I start it, lately, I'm having problems starting it, wouldn't allow me to use hard key to start it, had AAA tested Battery, which is strong, I keeped well over half/full tank in it, starter seems good, I'm thinking it's viper remote start, found the viper remote, seems to be good shape, AAA told me people are trying to get it removed, I brought the car from honda dealership, it was attached from previous driver, had 155k, had a oil change few weeks ago
