My Uncle is a service manager and swears that he hasn't seen any issues tied to these stop start systems, but I honestly don't believe it. I think over time it's going to eat away at the lifespan

It should be optional. As an option when the buyer buys it. Why the hell would anybody buy a Camaro or a Mustang with the thought that they want to worry about gas mileage? If you can afford those vehicles gas is not an issue. It probably cost an extra $500 to even install the start stop system start statistically speaking I would imagine that the majority of drivers will not drive the vehicle long enough to recuperate the cost that it cost to install the system. Another prime example of manufactures having to meet fuel economy standards set forth by a centralized federal government that has next to no idea on how the free market system actually works

The reason why they utilize this is because they can estimate the fuel economy to be better by claiming stop and start will make mpg better. All that stopping and starting on the engine is going to have some negative effects down the road I don’t care what they say that’s unnecessary wear on the starter and engine components. I didn’t find my gas mileage to be any better with my old truck that had it than my new truck that doesn’t was just annoying.

I’m watching many videos on this subject because my vehicle has auto stop too. I don’t think we save much on gas with this option but in stop and go traffic in bigger cities I do believe it can save on wear and tear on the engine during the hot summer months from all the heat and idling long periods of time I think it would be harder on the engine in those circumstances. I also forget to press the override button half the time leaving the house too. LOL

I have it on my new Forester. I don't mind the start and stop I was honestly worried about it having negative long term effects on the engine in the long run. Hopefully it doesn't but we will see lol

Auto stop start is by default on probably all about cafe standards and EPA rating for gas mileage. The Ford Ranger is listed as best in class for mpg. Instead of making an engine more efficient just shut it off at stop lights. Ford also claims how its better for the environment.

For me the stopping is very annoying, I would prefer to spend money on gas than stopping every block.

Great input there, my Toyota turbodiesel has this system and I think its great, there's a button to disable it so no big deal. The only thing now that's driving me mad is the dashcam isn't happy about it, it fails to turn back on every time the car restarts, mind you I have it hardwired to a Live fuse, but for some reason the voltage drops at restart making the camera turning off,

Some of these cars don't have a larger starter. So I would guess it would wear faster.

Ok short and simple.

Does Auto start/stop save gas? YES it does save gas the bigger the engine the more the savings.

Does the auto start/stop damage your vehicle? Yes and No. The No part....Vehicles designed for the system has beefier starter and is designed to handle more frequent starting cycles. The Yes part... putting the engine through numerous starting cycles does wear out the engine a little bit, however since it was just previously running, all the main bearings are still lubricated and won’t see any excess damage... unless you don’t do regular maintenance and use crap oil

The part with the auto start/stop not remembering is a little annoying! In my BMW I press the off button and it remembers it permanently. Hell you can even code the start/stop to just remain off forever. But that’s on a BMW, random info... the best auto start/stop implementations are on hybrids, as they use generators to start the vehicles.... those system will not damage the vehicle as it was designed for that function from the ground up, cheers!

I feel like it should just be a feature deal you get with any car you buy that has it. I wouldn’t want to pay for something that’s not worth using if most people figure they disable it when it activates repetitively. That’s just dealerships they want there money that’s why they design cars & features that are beyond difficult.
