The Last of Us” has left many wondering if a virus like that could ever really happen. While the show veered away from the deadly spores that were featured in the video game, the infected tendrils they feature are actually based on real fungi nicknamed the “zombie fungus”.

A zombie fungus infecting and controlling humans would take millions of years of co-evolution alongside humans to be able to do what they do with insects, which if you didn't know is quite a long time

Fun fact: Cordyceps is actually used in medicational treatment. You can also cook it, and people also grow it.

Why is the narrator still calling it a virus even though she knows it's a fungus?

Yeah. I know they took a lot of creative liberties but...the interview with John Hannah? That kept me up.

What's interesting is that not only is the earth getting warmer, but also there are trends showing average human body temperature is getting cooler since we have so many aids to fight infections-- vaccines, antibiotics, etc.-- so the increased body temp that used to help people fight infections is beginning to trend downwards because it's not necessary anymore.

Well yes the cordyceps fungus is a mind controlling fungus to ants its still true that the human temperature is too high to sustain a infection of this type. But also your immune system are to strong to be controlled by a fungus. And on top of it all it would take a long time to jump from infecting insects to infecting humans

The show doesn't predict any of these things. The show consults actual scientists and draws from actual published articles to include real hypothetical scenarios.

As an extreme toxic mold survivor who lost her Gma and eventually cat and whom also almost died, extremely damaging systemic fungal infections have already been happening for a long time. One being candida and other typically called toxic mold illness which is comprised of many different strains of fungus. This isn’t at all as far off (besides the over the top, theatrical appearance) as most of society will believe. It just wouldn’t present in this zombie movie appearance and don’t expect allopathic medicine to save you because it can’t without severe harm with antifungals that just hams kidneys and the liver, of which is needed to detox the fungus. So after people get off the med, if they’re still in the same environment, they just get much more sick. As the world gets warmer (fungus loves warm temps) and fungus adapts to the more cold temps year after year, mold will continue to grow and thrive in our environment, buildings and our bodies. Funguses also adapts to chemicals used to kill it-the spores that do survive it will continue to reproduce colonies much like bugs and create adaptation into society more and more.
