In this video, I'm gonna show you the easiest way to create 2D glow with outline in unity using Shader Graph and i know working with nodes can be a little frustrating cuz they are kind of hard to wrap your head around but playing around with different nodes can create a lot of interesting and cool shader effects that can make your game look awesome.

I hope this tutorial gives you a basic understanding of some of the nodes and from this point on you can play around with them to get awesome effects for your game.

Also a huge thanks to @BinaryLunar as this wouldn't have been possible without his tutorial so make sure to check his channel out.

This approach seems to have a very strong limitation: you can only count on the semi-transparency of pixels at the edge of the texture, and you can never make the glow go further than this. Therefore:
a. on a texture with little or no alpha (for instance a perfect square at alpha=1), the outline is barely visible
b. you cannot create a glow that goes anywhere farther from the texture's non-transparent pixels

I see it's based on BinaryLunar‬'s video so it inherited from the limitations there (at the end they show a Bloom effect to make it spread a little farther, but it's not the same as creating a thick outline)

In my case there is no outline around my Player when I subtract the two steps nodes with each other. Either it is completely black or white. The postprocessing affects my whole scene, is it possible that it only affects my player?

so you need transparent parts in your image for this right? a solid image probably won't work.

It works similarly in a 2D URP project, but the edges don't glow as brightly as in this video.
It's probably a difference in preprocessing settings.

In a newer version of unity this wont work. (2021.3.9f1) and you have to connect the alpha seperately from the add node into the fragment node.

I guess this is not working with built-in renderer?
