I'm still learning a lot about recording audio, so if this sounds obvious, it probably is. 🙂

I think one of the best takes I got from your video is that it comes down to the type of action you're recording as to which mic works the best. The wearable mics seem to be aimed at monologues where you are talking directly TO your audience or in an interview, but in way that is detached.

The camera mounted mics seem to be aimed at recording the "experience" (waterfall, race track, city street) with voice being part of the action, not a stabilized separate stream or channel.

I discovered this traveling last summer with new GoPro in the raw, zero experience, and no accessories except a tripod and stick. Setting up the tripod, and then walking 6 feet away and expecting the built in mic to sound fine while I was talking to the camera was a learning experience. 🙄

I did go back and forth between your DJI and Rode wearables to see which one I thought sounded better. They do sound different, but I can't say which sounds better to me.

Thanks for what you do!

The internal sounded pretty good itself. The rode wireless sounded the best! Thanks for this test!

While I recognize the media mod provides more benefits than just a microphone, I rarely use because the mic is just so sensitive. Prefer the windslayer- easier and more effective. Thanks for another excellent video!!

Great comparison. To solve the Rode Video Micro II showing up in the shot, I found that attaching the Rode to the side cold shoe (on media mode), rather than top cold shoe, you can get it out of the shot. My everyday use is the DJI Wireless. Thanks for all your help with GoPro videos!

Great comparison. Thanks for taking the the time to put it together! I stopped using the Media Mod (and the audio adapter) and just use a Windslayer. Biggest issue for me is that the Media Mod doesn’t have it’s own mounting feet or screw - which makes it a hassle getting the camera out to swap batteries, resets, etc.

The media mod is just an additional money grab from GoPro, there is no reason the unit itself shouldn't have a USB-C or 3.5mm input for a mic

For me the cheap wind slayer sounded good. It’s not as directional as the others and sounded more authentic for vlog style shooting.

Every time you say "this is what it sounds like" my brain finishes it off with "when doves cry" lol.

Great review, thank you.

I’ve been using the sennheiser mke 200 mic without the deadcat on top of the media mod and has worked simply great.
Mic is really compact and with its built-in wind protection and shock mount, I’ve had no complaints when recording in windy or shaky conditions.
Paired with the Zeus GoPro light and shorty, you have a killer and compact camera setup :)

Good stuff. I feel like the media kit mic was the best, quality wise. I had not thought about using the gopro for vlogging, and had been using the gopro hero10 with media kit for car racing, and the wind screen does an excellent job at cutting out wind, even on a car, at 30-70mph.

Nice comparison. I own Rode Wireless Go 2 and I must mention that sometimes it records the audio with a poor quality. Then everything changes and records in normal quality. So I can not rely on this product and I must control every video I shoot whether it has good audio quality. I think next time I will move to DJI wireless microphone.

I came to your channel because I was researching for an action cam to buy. After watching a few videos on your channel, I cannot help but to have David of AutomotivePress' image in the back of my mind when listening to you voice. Great channel and your videos are very informative.

Thank so much for doing this video. I have been using the go pro media mod and have not been happy with it. The rode go sounded so much better. Thank you again!

Thank you very much for creating this video. Your thorough research on which microphone to purchase for GoPro has assisted me in selecting a winner. In my particular case, I preferred the DJI microphone.

Hi Suzi, I use the Dji Mic set up as it's so convenient with the magnetic clip, plus you can record a back up track directly through the mic. Love the fact that you can stick the receiver and transmitter back in the case to charge up whilst out and about. Love your vids! xx

I just installed some of those little tiny wispy dead cats on my Hero 12 and I’m curious to see how well it works. Honestly, the internal mics are pretty amazing and for the convenience and lack of fuss I think I will try to work with them versus an add-on, Mike. Thank you for the terrific review, I love your style!
