German Court Convicts 93-Year-Old Ex-Nazi Guard Bruno Dey of Mass Murder at Stutthof Camp

A German court on Thursday convicted a 93-year-old former SS private of being an accessory to more than 5,000 counts of murder at the Stutthof concentration camp, where he served as a guard in the final months of World War II.
He was given a two-year suspended sentence, sparking accusations that the court had been too lenient.
Bruno Dey was convicted of 5,232 counts of accessory to murder by the Hamburg state court, news agency dpa reported.
That is equal to the number of people believed to have been killed at Stutthof during his service there in 1944 and 1945.
He also was convicted of one count of accessory to attempted murder.
Because of his age at the time, Dey's case was heard in a juvenile court.
The trial opened in October, and in deference to Dey's age, court sessions were limited to two, two-hour sessions a week.
Prosecutors had called for a three-year sentence, while the defense demanded acquittal.
The lawyer for the joint plaintiff, Dr Christoph Rückel, criticised the Hamburg court for giving a former concentration guard a two-year suspended sentence.
''If he had been on trial in 1982, the sentence would have been harsher," he said.
Stefan Waterkamp, the lawyer of Bruno Dey, said that the sentence was based on the fact that ''Stutthof became an extermination camp due to the hostile conditions, due to the overcrowding of the camp due to the lack of supplies for the prisoners.''
In a closing statement to the court earlier this week, Dey apologized for his role in the Holocaust, saying "it must never be repeated."
