Modern cars are a privacy nightmare.

It's worse than you realize. In this video we dive into all the types of data your car is collecting about you: from video footage, microphone recordings, location data, biometrics, all the way to files/contacts/photos ingested from your phone!

00:00 Cars are NO place for a private conversation!
02:11 What data is our car collecting?
05:41 Video footage
06:16 Microphones
08:09 Location
08:40 There's a SIM card in your phone, sending off all your data!
10:01 Telematics
10:56 Sensors: Capturing weight, emotions, etc
11:10 DON'T CONNECT YOUR PHONE TO YOUR CAR!
13:00 Who is getting access to our data?
14:06 This is a huge problem

This is the first video in a series we're doing on car privacy. Later in the series we examine:
- how easy it is to hack modern cars
- trackers in cars that you had no idea existed
- the perverse incentives that drive companies to collect as much data about us as possible
- the history of when this all started
- dangers of used cars: the previous owner of your car might still have access to all your car’s remote features, tracking tools, and cameras!
- how to wipe your own information and location history from your car before you sell it
- how to opt out of this collection and better protect yourself

We really need to get a conversation going around car privacy, and increase awareness. It’s so important we push back against the normalization of these practices, starting now.

Never imagined a car having more privacy issues than a smartphone. Miss the days where they were just an engine with four wheels

Time to start suing companies for invasions of privacy.

The silent creep of data collection is maddening.

My favorite car is 36 years old. No electric mirrors, no heated seats, no cup holders, no privacy issues. I love it.👍

I bought a new 2023 Rav4 this year. When I picked it up at the dealership, the salesman was surprised when I wouldn't download the Toyota app. Every time I get into my car, the screen says, "user profile not loaded." I just clear it and continue on as a guest in my own car.
4 wheels and an engine is all I need.

Do you remember when we were up in arms about caller ID?
It's almost adorable.

This is also a BIG issue with car rentals. People connect their phones, then return the car without thinking about it, never realizing that the next renter might gain access to everything the car collected from the phone (texts, contacts, calls, etc.).

Ahhh yesss, that is why my car is over 30 years old. I keep it tuned up, with good tires, no car payment, no privacy or hack issues. Thank you, Father Yah!👏

I'm so glad to hear someone do a video on this subject! I've been going on about it for years but nobody seems to believe it.

In this day and age, being paranoid makes perfect sense.

Tesla is a master at collecting and storing your data and personal info through their cars. They claim they do it anonymously, but they know which car it came from and they know who owns the car. So their anonymous claim is 100% BS.

Make sure your phone's bluetooth is off when riding with someone. Their car will search for any signal to link to. The dumbest thing I hear is "well I don't have anything to hide, let them spy". 🤦🏻‍♀🤦🏻‍♀

Yes! Your phone conversations over Bluetooth in your car are VERY LOUD outside of your car, too! Might as well be using a megaphone for those "private" conversations!

These manufactures should have a fat class action lawsuit. Because many top brands dumped tons of money into propaganda saying why the right to repair needs to be removed from repairing your own vehicle or shops. Their claim in court was for your privacy/security of your personal information.... And then what do these parasites do.... Here ya go! Them spying on you and invading our privacy, stealing/selling your personal data.

If all cars have SIM cards, then why can’t police locate stolen cars easily?

I had a 2020 Grand Cherokee stolen from in front of my home 2 years ago. With all this terrific tracking and data collection technology, you’d think that the vehicle could be located. I logged into my “Guardian” tracker within 20 minutes of its disappearance and it had already been disabled. The police absolutely did nothing, not even coming over at all. The insurance company mailed a me check and I mailed back both key fobs and title. It’s unbelievable that a 3 ton vehicle can evaporate like a fart in the wind, never to be seen again. I firmly believe that there are people somewhere on this planet aside from the thieves, who know exactly where that Jeep is and who now possesses it, whether it’s in North America or Africa, including camera feeds.

Maybe it's time to sue the government for invasion of privacy.
