Welcome back to the podcast! Today’s guest is Sally K. Norton, consultant, speaker, and vitality coach! Despite her love of healthy foods, she suffered through three decades of pain and health challenges, from the age of 12. A wide-range of health care providers, surgeries, orthotic appliances, physical therapy, prescription drugs, and other care options failed to help. But surprisingly, a specific change of diet finally did: the low-oxalate diet. Now, she seeks to educate people with accurate information about oxalates, and how to keep them from harming your health and stealing your happiness. Enjoy!

Good healthy food is the enemy, that is SO disappointing! I have been eating organic for 30 years, eating the recommended, fruits, vegetables, nuts & seeds and my body hurts all over. I have all kinds of terrible symptoms with my GI, aches & pains with my back, was diagnosed with osteoporosis this year and now I know why. I have juiced with spinach, kale, swiss chard, made my own almond milk, used almond flour for recipes for cookies and breads, I have listened to all the experts about eating healthy and I feel lousy! I also try to exercise every day, love to hike, bike and paddleboard and just push through the pain of my body. What a dissservice from the health experts. Thank you Sally for bringing this to our attention!

I agree with Sally that feeling great trumps any craving! My fridge and pantry are rather bare these days, but it suits me just fine, and each simple meal is a delight.

No food is worth me feeling bad. Exactly. Why I I never "knowingly" went off plan with keto in 1 1/2 years. Crazy rashes in my 28 days of my carnivore challenge...good to find out its oxalates. This will take my health to the next level!

This helped so much. I knew I had a problem with oxalates, but did not realize how toxic it is for me! Nor did I understand HOW MANY foods are still high in oxalates, other than the obvious, such as spinach.

I had a handful of bouts of anxiety, shortness of breath, fatigue, tingling all over, cramps in my gut, sleepiness, dizziness all at once. Er trips are frequent. I thought carnivore wasn't working after about a year so i quit and started a few times. Now im back to carnivore for good.

When I was a child 8 years of age I had allergy test done because I had asthma so bad.... All the things you mentioned I could not eat. My body had a horrible reaction and now I believe it's the oxalates that are affecting me internally. It's poison for my body type... Wow it's all I can say

Me too I have a problem with oxalate. At first I thought I had gout but my sister told me to cut on oxalate and I did for at least a month and I was feeling great. Than, I did something stupid, I went to eat a 65 grams fritolay bag of chips. I couldn't work for a week. This made me realize that I couldn't eat junk food and fast food. It's as if my body has become allergic to this kind of food.

Waking up in the mornings with white hard crystals on the outside corners of my eyes. I have to be gentle in removing them because they are so sharp and painful. Weird rashes on my skin. Poor sleep. Bye bye Spinach and all your other high oxalate friends

TLDR
- Oxalate accumulates in the body from high-oxalate foods and can lead to various health issues.
- Symptoms of oxalate toxicity include joint pain, headaches, muscle knots, rashes, and autoimmune-like conditions.
- Cloudy urine might indicate the presence of oxalates, stressing the kidneys even if kidney stones aren't formed.
- Oxalate forms calcium oxalate crystals which can lead to kidney stones; the body usually inhibits clumping of these crystals to prevent stone formation.
- Oxalate-rich foods include spinach, almonds, beets, and berries, while some low-oxalate options are cabbage, arugula, and certain lettuces.
- Prevention is key as excreting accumulated oxalates can be challenging, making it important to moderate consumption of high-oxalate foods.

Tips:
Tip 1: Avoid Overdoing Oxalates
Tip 2: Don't Make Children Eat Spinach and Swiss Chard
Tip 2: Gradually Reduce Oxalate Foods to Prevent Unmasking Oxalate Illness
Tip 3: Oxalate Removal Takes Time (7+ Years for Cell Replacement)
Tip 3: Support Body During Oxalate Removal Process
Tip 4: Understand Symptoms Might Result from Body's Healing
Tip 5: Define Red, Yellow, and Green Light Foods for Yourself
Tip 5: Prioritize Feeling Good Over Compromising with Food
Tip 6: Replace Sugar with Nourishing Options to Control Sweet Tooth
Tip 6: Use Sour Foods to Signal End of Meal Instead of Desserts
Tip 7: Consider Potential Oxalate Connection in Gout, Focus on Diet
Tip 8: Address Hashimoto's-Related Depression with Lifestyle Changes
Tip 8: Get Sun Exposure, Cryotherapy, Nature Time for Mood Boost
Tip 9: Seek Dermatologist for Dry, Itchy Skin; Investigate Triggers

I started having green smoothies almost daily a couple years ago and have had chronic bladder pain for about a year and a half. I may have IC. I eat a lot of these foods and often have cloudy urine. I am going to start cutting back. Going back to yogurt and fruit, or oatmeal for breakfast.
Towards the end of this, she discussed the common issue of depression and anxiety. I have been helped tremendously by doing daily breathwork and ending my shower on the cold setting. She mentioned cryotherapy but didn't elaborate. This is a free alternative . There are numerous videos here on youtube on breathwork and cold water therapy. I started about 3 weeks ago and cannot believe how transformative it is. I feel like a new person and am determined to beat this chronic pain issue. I kid you not, absolute 180 degree turnaround in the way I feel about myself, my life and those around me. Try it, sisters..sick as hell of being a depressed, middle-aged woman!!

I’ve had several kidney stone attacks over the years and love peanuts and chocolate. Doctors never mentioned oxalates.

Adding calcium-rich foods to meals helps reduce oxalate levels. Calcium naturally binds to oxalate; eating calcium-rich foods at meals helps with this binding and removal of oxalate through the stool rather than through urine.
