How long should a car battery last?

If you are having trouble starting your car, or if you find that the battery is no longer maintaining its charge, and or if your car is dead after a few days of standing, it is probably time to change your battery.

Car batteries have a lifespan, just like any other kind of battery. As fitted by manufacturers to new cars, batteries have been known to last for up to 7 years, but in older cars, batteries will usually only last an average of 2 to 3 years.

You can replace a car’s battery yourself, but you will need to give in your old battery when purchasing a new one. However, seeing as most fitment centres don’t charge to change out the batteries or perform a battery check, it is easier just to have them do it for you.

Car batteries are not all created equal, though, and you will need to make sure you get the right size, shape and amperage for your car. Also note that the battery terminal locations and polarity may vary, depending on the different designs out there.

My car battery is original to the car from 2008, it's 14 years old and still works perfectly fine, 14 YEARS and still working, it's a Johnson Controls battery in a 2008 Pontiac Vibe
Edit: it finally stopped working

I bought a car battery brand new and fully charged for an old Renault back in 1984 when I learned to drive and never used it as the car was sold. Not sure of the brand but has red top, white base and 2 white rectangular caps for cells. It sat in a shed until 2020. I put it in a Rover 25 and it started. Held a charge for over 30 years.

My run of the mill replacement battery came with a 6 year 'warranty' and is now 5 years old. I figure I'm now on borrowed time especially with winter coming. Unless you're selling your car in the next 6 months, buy a new battery at 5 years. Don't be a cheapskate like me (or at least have jumper cables handy).

All battery manufacturers should be forced to print manufacture date on lid. Because you might be buying one which has been sitting on the shelf for 2 yrs.

I bought a 2016 F150 new in 2016. The stock battery is still going 7 years and 95, 000 miles later. When it go bad. I will buy a new battery from the dealer. I used to buy batteries from Autozone and Walmart. They would always go bad just pass the 3 year free replacement.

The extra electronics, amplifiers, sirius xm. And other extras drain your battery.

Mines 7 years old, it started to show a few symptoms of needing replacing but I've currently got it on charge to see if it will desulfate and work better. It's only a 35ah 300cca rated so it's not that expensive.

Do newer cars' batteries die sooner due to so much more electric demand?

I bought a brand new Ram truck 1500 and put 81000 miles within two years. The battery went dead. Then you may own a car for 5 years and only drive 50000 miles and the battery is still good. I guess the mileage you put in is also relative.

modern batteries in a modern car with all the electrical computer systems lucky to last 3 yrs, itll just be dead one day, dont try to boost it unless you need to for the day to get somewhere, go buy a new batteri

in a older car with less electronics about 4

OG older cars back in day youd easily get 5+ years out of a battery

thanks china
