I share the same IU basketball connection with Coach Tonsoni. I grew up in South Bend and was an obvious ND football fan, but I also followed Digger's basketball team (w/Adrian Dantley and John Shumate), then in 1974 my dad introduced me to IU basketball and he and I watched the the 74-75 season together and I was hooked. To this day I can clearly remember feeling so upset after the UK loss in 75 that I had to go for a walk around the neighborhood to process what had just happened. I was 10 years old. I was at IU in the 80's and was a senior in 1987 and at the same fountain celebration.

Coach and I were both sophomores back in the 86-87 season. My Dad had been at IU during the Coach McCracken years (both with Don Schlundt and later in grad school with Jimmy Rayl), so we got to share stories comparing the two greats of IU basketball. The only way I can describe the atmosphere on campus is that every guy at IU-B got a minor in basketball. We all listened to Coach's radio show. We all went to Coach's lectures that he did at the Aud the last few years I was there. Coach was just a giant figure on campus and in the culture.
To be honest, I think the other giant figure on campus at the time was Herman Wells. Coach Knight was certainly a flawed genius, but Herman Wells was a truly good man and the reason that Indiana University is seen as a place for good people to congregate and become Hoosiers.

Best episode of Assembly Call ever! Thank you guys. This was much needed. I’ve been kinda numb for a few days and just remembering so many great moments of my life shared, with Coach Knight. He is the reason I am a Hoosier Fan 4 Life. 😢

n 1976, already bored with Law School I decided to challenge a statute that mandated any candidate for office had to own land. They woudn't put me on the ballot but i won at the Indiana Supreme Court. Bobby Knight heard about it and even though he has always been a Republican - told people to vote for me because "that kid has balls". I questioned some of his actions but always so appreciated what he did for me. RIP Bobby Knight

I would be interested in knowing what the percentage of high school teams in Indiana ran motion offense during Coach Knight's tenure? I know a lot of the high schools around my hometown of Washington IN did.
