I sincerely hope that kid is still playing trumpet now and killing it.

It probably came off harsher than Miles actually meant it.

He didn't crush that boy. He told him what he needed to hear to get better. Being told your really good to young is can kill the drive and hunger to become great.

The way Miles suggested Eb was actually very genuine and let’s you know he’s not trying to shoot this kid down but actually give him valuable advice.

I'd rather honesty from a Legend that a compliment from a fool.

Sounds like a musician talking to a musician

Telling him he knows how he sounds is a motivational compliment. He gives the kid credit for being a developing musician who has ears.

I bet that kid grew up to appreciate that. No BS, straight words of wisdom.

The thing is: Miles Davis was born in another era. He lived through the 30s, 40s, and 50s. It was a tough world, especially for a black man. He didn't grew with flattering and softness. He didn't mean harm, there's nothing bad in telling a kid to practice. The 80s were different times.

“He know how he sounds” can be taken 2 ways.

Miles gave genuine advice. There are millions of amateur musicians out there who sound ok, but not great. A musician can hear the quality of their sound and honesty with themself will inform what practice is needed. He then told the kid a specific tip to guide - play Eb. You’re playing D, transcribe all the notes to Eb (1/2 step higher). The kid looked at the page to remember if it’s written in D. Miles knows this is standard, and is telling him to KNOW the music so intimately you can play it 1/2 step higher than written. EXCELLENT practice technique to truly grasp the music and play musically, rather than simply what you’re told on the page. Musician to musician, this honest feedback is invaluable from legends like Miles Davis. If Miles was polite, he would have shorted the kid of a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn the approach from someone who truly knows music.

You can’t ask a personality type like Miles Davis what they think and expect “good job “ if you didn’t merit it. He did give the kid good overall advice and a suggestion on how to make it better.

I like that miles was straight forward. Tell the truth to kids and they will grow.

"He knows how he sounds" was the honest and best way to put it.

Kid didn't need to be told it wasn't good, and he didn't need false praise.

But then Davis goes on to give him advice, he didn't say "Stop playing trumpet", and he didn't say he was better when he was that kid's age.

Words of wisdom from the legend himself, hope that kid took it to heart and still plays today, if even only for himself.

If playing it in E Flat is cool, then consider me Miles Davis

That was a great show of respect towards the kid. Treated him as a musician instead of a child.

Miles treating the kid like he isn’t a kid is the highest form of respect. Millions of musicians crave those simple words of constructive criticism from the greatest Trumpet player to have ever lived and this kid had it handed to him on a plate. I hope that kid carried on because this opportunity was a true blessing and he probably didn’t realise the magnitude of this interaction at the time.

I admire this kid like nobody’s business. If I was a young trumpeter, I’d be way too terrified to perform in front of Miles Davis, especially if I knew he was going to give me a personal assessment of my skills when I was done. This kid has balls of steel!
