Men's Tennis Continues Road Stretch at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men’s tennis team continues its road stretch as they face the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Wednesday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center at 2 p.m.

This is the second of 10 straight matches away from the Orville Cox Tennis Center.

Last Time Out
The Broncs dropped a tough neutral site match to the Nicholls State University Colonels 3-4 at the Walden Country Club.

The Broncs (2-3) dropped the doubles point as the Colonels (1-2) took a pair of close matches on court one and three.

The Colonels started off singles competition with a wins on courts six and four to take a 3-0 but the Broncs answered with a three victories of their own. Freshman Koby Jansen put the Broncs on the board with a straight set 6-1, 6-4 win over Evan Karatzas on court three. Junior Hector Ramirez followed that with a 6-4, 6-1 over Sam Meessen on court one and sophomore Juan Cruz Soria tied the match with a three set victory over Partha Adavelly on court two. Soria dropped his opening set 1-6 but answered back with a 6-4 victory in the second set and a 6-3 win in the third and final set.

Heading into the decisive match, freshman Miguel Alvarez-Hevia dropped the first set of his match against Kieran Cronin 7-6. He then fought back after trailing in the second set 2-5 to win the set 7-5, which forced a third set but he fell 1-6 on court five.

Scouting the Islanders
The Islanders enter the match with a 3-3 record on the season. They started out with three straight wins and are currently riding a three-match losing streak after falling to Southern Methodist University on February 12, East Tennessee State on February 14 and Texas Tech on February 15.

Peter Nagy leads the Islanders with a 4-0 record in singles competition during the dual match season. He has played all four at the No. 1 position. Kevin Bettendroffer has a 3-2 record while playing all of his dual matches at the No. 2 position.

In doubles, the team of Nagy and Guillaume Rauseo has a 2-2 record while playing all of their matches at the No. 1 position and they are tied with Bettendroffer and Paul Cook, who also have a 2-2 record while playing at the No. 2 position.

The Series
The Broncs are 13-36-1 all-time against the Islanders in a series that dates back to 1961. The Broncs and Colonels didn’t play each other last season. The last time these two teams met was on April 20, 2013 as the Islanders defeated the Broncs 7-0 in Corpus Christi.

The Broncs last defeated the Islanders on March 10, 2010 as they recorded a 4-3 victory in Corpus Christi.

The Broncs have seven student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Australia, Croatia, Mexico, Spain and Trinidad and Tobago.
