Alexander III of Macedon succeeded his father at the young age of 20, becoming the King of the ancient Kingdom of Macedon. He spent most of his years as king conducting military campaigns, particularly against the rival of his life, the Persian king Darius III. By the age of 33, his massive collection of territories stretched from Greece to northwestern India. Many historians consider him to be one of the most successful military commanders in history. But what did he look like? Today we’ll explore his fascinating history and discuss what his true face might have been, before revealing some re-creations of his appearance.

What can I say? I am 68 years old, and have been a student of Alexander for 45 years. I have lectured about the Hellenistic World for 27 years in 3 countries. During all that time I have been kidnapped, shipwrecked, shot at, chased by armies and Indians, and attacked by animals. Yet your art simply brings this old man to tears. You make History into a living thing, more real and alive than any book.

Imagine being an archaeologist and finding Alexander's tomb. The greatest find there would not be his remains or his sarcophagus, it would be Alexander's personalized compilations of Homer's Iliad with handwritten annotations from Aristotle himself! A legendary book, carried by Alexander all over the known world from Macedonia to the Indus River in India. It would be simply one of the greatest archaeological finds in history.

Besides being a military genius, Alexander was drop dead gorgeous.

My history professor was Greek. He was an outstanding instructor. His classes were always packed. We were mesmerized by his teachings of world history with characters like Alexander the Great, Thomas Jefferson, the Cherokee Indians, etc. It was my 2nd favorite college course. My 1st was my English professor who taught us about the ancients: Aristotle, Plato, and more recent Aleksandre Solzhenitsyn. Both subjects were truly unforgettable.

seeing him be brought to life made me tear up. I’m not Greek but I truly respect and admire how this young man lived a life that’s truly incomparable. The way he motivated his men, his genius, his vision. Truly one of the most magnificent human beings, and seeing him brought to life with the hair and the strong face. Just amazing. Like can you imagine being a part of all those moments, makes it just feel so much more real. Thank you for this

Omg imagine having Aristotle as your tutor. He was a well-known philosopher and just another person in society but the fact feels unreal.

My thirteen-year-old daughter is your number one fan; she watches ALL of your reconstructions of historical figures. She would really appreciate it if you would consider doing episodes on Hypatia and Sappho. Thanks so much for your outstanding work!

I think one of my favorite Alexander moments is shortly before the Battle of Gaugamela when Parmenion wanted to accept Darius' deal, and Alexander replied with: "And if I were Parmenion I would accept it." Simply glorious. If I may add: in addition to your awesome artwork, I love your engaging and concise narration, too. You have a knack for storytelling in more ways than one! Congratulations on a well earned 100K subscribers!

Tawny hair that catches red in the sunlight and becomes properly golden in summer is definitely a thing, probably all descriptions are true. As for the dark hair during battle, rain or muck will do that to you! Amazing recreations and format, love this channel!

I find Royalty Now's YouTube videos to be strongly addictive. Along with the real-life recreations, the short history lessons are very informative as well. Nicely done.

[Robin Lane Fox, Oxford University] Afghanistan: The Lasting Legacy of Alexander the Great in Afghanistan. *_"The classical world came to Afghanistan with Alexander the Great, he conquered the area before moving into India, he left behind him settlers and cities that he founded, and of course, being Greeks they [Macedonians] expressed their culture. The Greek legacy is so strong because their art is so divinely beautiful."_*

There was so much I didn't know about him until I watched this. Even in shorter videos, you just summarize everything perfectly. I wouldn't say Alexander behaved nobly all his life but it's undeniable that he was extraordinary in lots of ways. Otherwise he wouldn't be remembered today.

I think it's the sheer anticipation of these recreations that make this channel so appealing. I love the way you build up the anticipation with the rich history.
