Explore how marine creatures survive the frigid waters of Antarctica, and what traits allow them to live in such conditions.

--

The vast, white surface of Antarctica stretches for over 3 million square kilometers. On the coast of this expanse, just a few meters beneath the ice, lies a remarkably diverse realm that is home to over 8,000 species of sea denizens who rely on an arsenal of otherworldly traits to survive. So how do these species not only live, but thrive, in such harsh conditions? Nadia Frontier investigates.

I feel like the script writers are often under appreciated. "Multicoloured constellation of life" is such an incredible description for the arctic biodiversity.

Amazing how creatures are able to adapt to extreme environments. Whether its the harsh winters or brutal summer life finds a way.

This animation is so absurdly cute! And I love the information, I know so little about the poles.

Amazing to see how all of these creatures survive in these extreme conditions, great vid!!

However another rare but dangerous event are brinecles (or salt water icicles), also help control certain animal populations in check.
In turn the the dying animals that are left behind by the brinecles will become food for many other animals(including those Giant isopods that you have explained).
But unfortunately they are far more rare in the arctic than in the Antarctic, since climate change is making these bizarre salty icicles even rarer and less likely to occur.
The salt water icicles are also important for killing off parasites that could make most species sick, and weirdly enough some animals will use them to hide their eggs safe from predators and parasites (and those are highly resistant to drying out).

I like the quote at the beginning. Humans 'That life lives in extreme conditions, how can it survive? Sea Spider '0 degrees? Sounds like summer weather to me.'

Waw this is amazing. Every season has the unique condition itself as the opportunity for the creature beneath of the ice find the way to survive at the coldest place on the earth that human have a limit. It means that we can't be so cocky and greedy with all the resource that earth supply for us
