Could you survive in Siberia? What is life like in Siberia, Russia? Would you be able to withstand the very cold temperatures? What is the coldest place on earth? Could Siberia be the pole of cold? What is Yakutsk like?

People manage to live in some pretty remote places. Take the 258 folks that live on the island of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic. If you want to visit them, you’ll have to take a ship from Cape Town for a journey of 1,732 miles [2,787 km]. For some peace and quiet you might also visit Barrow, Alaska, which is only reachable by plane. The 4,200 inhabitants of this town spend much of their extremely cold winters in total darkness. Even more remote is the town of Ittoqqortoormiit in Greenland, whose 452 population make their money fishing shrimp and hunting whales and polar bears. They are also happy to put the intrepid tourist up for the night. How would you fare in one of these far-flung destinations? That’s what we’ll find out today, in this episode of the Infographics Show, Could you survive in Siberia? Welcome to the Coldest Inhabited Place On Earth!

I'm from Wisconsin. The summers are hot and humid, but I've seen some winters as cold as -70F. What seems to frighten visitors is how cold the air is to breathe. Breathing without a scarf can be hard to get accustomed to at first. Most people's lungs aren't used to that initial shock. I had a friend in high school whose family moved from Tennessee. She came to school bundled up in October and asked when this "wretched winter" would end. We all kinda giggled like, "hate to tell you this, but Winter hasn't started yet!"

In another video about Oymyakon someone mentioned what the citizens wear when they venture outside: three layers consisting first of cotton, then wool, and finally animal skins or the fluff of birds. I thought that was really interesting.

When Siberia's ice melt, it caused cold weather in the Philippines and the climate in the Philippines drops significantly. I just can'tan really imagine how cold the ice there is. Cold people are tough indeed

I spent several months in Irkutsk (on Lake Baikal, not far from Mongolia), some of which was in winter. When I tell people that, and they say "oh, it must be so cold there!" I have to remind them I was in IRkutsk not YAkutsk where the climate is much harsher.

Technically the coldest "inhabited place" on Earth is the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, which is a base located at the South Pole. It has a year-round population, and the hottest temperature ever recorded was merely 10°F. The lowest temperature recorded was like -117°F. It is always and perpetually freezing.
