For those who think using LSL stud framing is a bad idea and that exposure to water during construction will ruin them, this is obviously not the case. It's engineered lumber, engineered using waterproof adhesives and wax coatings to withstand normal water exposure during construction. They add cost, but are great to work with and will give you perfectly straight walls, which is valuable for kitchen cabinet and counter installations. No shimming, no crowning, no cull pile.

Hey Steven @stevenbaczekarchitect9431, I try to watch all of your videos and I remember the early construction videos of “Riverside” but I had a question in regard to its wall assembly. It was a 2x4 staggered stud 24o.c utilizing a 2x8 base & top plate. It was also utilizing LSL studs and plates if I remember correctly. My question is on the 2x4s being spaced 24 o.c. What are the guidelines on this or how does code view it? Could that only be done because of the structural LSLs in use or could you do that with standard dimensional lumber given that the structural wall assembly is technically 2x4 12” o.c. at that point? I just didn’t know about sheathing it since the outside walls are 2x4 24o.c. spaced but maybe it doesn’t matter since they share the same bottom and top plates?

Maybe that would only be a problem in double wall assemblies? I really like this wall assembly because I can imagine no holes for electrical, and very easy rockwool batt insulation utilizing 2 layers of 3.5” 24o.c. batts! Love to hear your thoughts!

We were staggering studs like that in the mid 70's. We put 1" foil faced polyisocyanurate on the outside. No analysis of how well it worked but, we had clients that were willing to pay for that detail.

Is anybody going to discuss (or notice), that those are OSL studs not a regular 2x4?? I personally am not a fan of OSB because it's just not as sturdy as plywood, roofs are really spongy nowadays and you can see the rafter lines in new houses because the OSB is sagging between the rafters. Everything is built to minimum standards, and it shows to an old fart like me. Get those studs wet and I bet you have a real problem on your hands, or maybe even your head! Lol!

Amazing, I want to save $100 dollars on energy bill a month and I would like to spend 200K in advance to recoup my money in 100 years. Savvy investment.
