The x-15 goes over mach 6 whereas the blackbird went over mach 3. The SR-71 is the fastest manned air-breathing aircraft. The X-15 is a rocket powered aircraft, not just a rocket. The Bell X-1, the plane that broke the sound barrier, was powered in the same way. Remember, the X-15 was an experimental data gathering aircraft dropped from the wing of a B-52. So yes, the X-15 is the fastest manned aircraft.

Edit 2: The space shuttle does not count. It is basically a glorified glider, albeit a bad one, strapped to a rocket.

If you look at the X 15’s vertical stabilizers, you will see that they are pointed almost 45° down. The reasoning behind this is to make the aircraft unstable that means the aircraft was so stable to begin with that it couldn’t even turn that is why on airliners, you will see the wings and vertical stabilizer is pointing up to stabilize the plane.

Yes the x-15 was an experimental rocket plane that not only hit almost mach 7, but accidentally broke the Karmen line, earning the pilot the first pair of astronaut wings given to a civilian test pilot

I remember watching clips of the X15's last flights in the 70's, as a child I was so Into Aircraft, of all types and makes, and read everything I could find about them, But it was a Rocket Engine'd Spacecraft, flying at the edge of Space, at over 4500mph, made it the fastest Manned Aircraft, even though, it couldn't take off Itself
and needed a lift to 45, 000ft?
