9:46 There are at least 2 A-12's remaining. There is one on display at the US Space and Rocket Center, Huntsville, AL. It is commonly misidentified as an SR-71, but it is an A-12.

If you do a little research you will find that the Blackbird did not fly for final time in 1999, it was briefly removed from mothballs during Iraq and Afghan wars early on.

The space shuttle was not built for speed but it did orbit at 17, 500 miles/hour. That smashes anything else. So, there has to be an altitude limit for this contest.

The "need for speed" has been realized to not be the most important thing for fighter planes anymore. They just need to be fast enough, somewhere between mach 1.8 and mach 2. That's why so many of these are old. Most combat takes place around mach 1.2 or less.
