It's easy to add an IP address temporarily, or permanently in Linux. The process has changed in recent years, but we cover a few ways to accomplish the task in this solution clip from our livestream. Here's the original assignment:

Thank you for the video,
for the record, netplan uses systemd-netword in headeless system (you can for example check with systemctl status systemd-networkd)

That was awesome. I was thinking of getting a usb network card to have an additional ip. With this tutorial, I don't need to. Thanks

Sadly it doesn't show if it works the same way if your primary ip adress is static and how nmcli would alter the config file in this case.

If you minus(ed) the original IP address, would the new IP replace the old one? Or would you have to somehow change the original IP in dhcp? I apologize, I'm a bit new to this. Also, all cards on the table: I'm trying to change an IP address on another machine to a new IP address because there was a data leak. For security reasons, I need to make sure that the old IP and the new IP don't match.

nmtui for the win, works from the cli and easier to walk someone through from over the phone.

I'm not sure i understand how this works, don't i get my ip address from a DHCP server?

wont you have to add a route for the secondary IP?
