Sneaky Ways Aldi Tricks You Into Spending More Money

Aldi has plenty of great stuff on offer, but if you ask most people why they shop there, the number one reason will almost definitely be the prices. The merchandise at Aldi is generally cheaper than at other supermarket chains, and is often on display with a no-frills presentation. The chain's commitment to low prices has paid off. In the U.S., it now has more than 2,000 stores in 36 states.

But like any retail outlet, Aldi's goal is to make money. To do that, they have lots of different ways to entice customers to buy another item or two. Here are some sneaky ways Aldi tricks you into spending more money.

"Do you really use more than 1 or 2 onions per week?"

Who ever wrote this line clearly does not cook their own food or even know how to cook.

Onions are a vital component in most cuisines. Also, unless you are cooking enough for a single meal for just one or two people, you are going to want more than one or two onions per meal. They are vital to the flavor of nearly everything I cook.

Low prices and good quality. I love Aldi.

Nobody is going to beat it's prices. However, it would be nice to be able to do all of your shopping there rather than having to go to another store to finish getting what you need. I'm not talking about not being able to get oddball stuff, but staples.

Every time I go there the cashiers just throw your stuff in the cart, not being careful to keep stuff from getting damaged.

In Australia the fruit and veg are seperate but you do have the option of bulk. I shop at Aldi's all the time. The same shop at Woolworths/Coles is double the price but quality of Aldi's is so much better.

Yes, we (two!) do use much more than two onions in a week!

I don’t think I can add anything new to the comments other than I generally have been completely satisfied with my Aldi purchases and especially the special items. John. USA

I wish our local Aldi looked like the stores in the video. It has reduced the number of available items substantially, even before recent shortages, and rearranged the store to make it look like there is more available than there really is. Often, there is only one case of an item on the shelf, where in the past, there were additional cases behind it. Then, the shortages came with the result that most of the freezers are empty. And when they offer Aldi finds, they never order enough to meet demand. You have to be there on the day the item arrives to have a chance to purchase it. And it is not predictable what day that is, except for meat specials that arrive on Wednesday.

The one close to me in Texas used to have the produce in the center towards the back (and snack items at the entry), but recently changed it to put produce near the entry. We used to have a Save A Lot near me, but they closed down a few years before Aldi moved into town. The prices are similar but the quality of the Aldi stuff is far better.

Both of our Aldi locations in my town actually have produce right up front (with pantry towards the back half of the store) and not as you described. I know you said "most" stores but one of our locations was reworked to put produce in front so I'm unsure of how accurate or recent your info is.

I went to Aldi's this morning. Glad we got one near me, along with an Asda

If you forget a bag, or don't have enough bags for all your purchases, they usually have a big cage full of boxes from stocking the shelves. The flimsier ones are easy to recycle and the sturdier ones, like fruit crates, are nice to have.

I don't know if it's sneaky. Because I'm not sure what you're going to say. But if I can go in there and shop wisely and come home with more food even though I spend more money and I open up the refrigerator and I have better nutrition, I think that's a sneaky I can handle. So now I'm loving to hear what your thoughts are on this. Thank you so much.
Oh my goodness they are suggesting I do other things and I have return some thing I didn't like and I didn't have the receipt. So I got my money back. I didn't need the ball I didn't need a replacement. And they were very courteous and her very nice. So I know what you're saying. But some people think everybody is out to get them. And sometimes I do wonder. But I've got some really good stuff at Aldi's that is identical to Trader Joe's right also love to shop. And since they are sister stores it's logical.

Let me get this straight. It's unethical of Aldi's to offer good deals advantageous to the customer because it encourages them to buy more? In what universe does that logic make sense? By that logic, stores shouldn't offer sales or good prices in order to discourage customers from overspending. Who writes this stuff?

About those temporary specials, where Aldi's is selling a closeout, those prices tend to be fabulous. Many times in the past I tried the item and loved it and the price, but when I went back they were all gone. Now I know that if it's a kind of product I normally buy and it's on one of those closeout specials (which are color-coded on the sign), buy as many as you can because they won't be there when you get back. I learned this lesson from experience.

I love Aldi's. If it was not for their trickery. I would not known about trying other products, which are a staple in my house hold now.

Great quality products, great prices, super clean stores. What else xan you want.

Except, like a previous comment. Carry more items so that I dont have to finish my grocery shopping elsewhere.

Specialty cheeses usually draw me in. My fridge door is nearly full of them. The flavored English cheeses are a bit of a ripoff, but the grana padano is worthwhile, notably.

Cast iron and some other cookware: I’ve bought more at Aldi than I need. Almost all have been at least adequate.

They have far better prices than any other store in the Syracuse NY area and they haven't raised prices nearly as much as the big established places like Tops and Wegmans. We have a place in Liverpool called Nichols that continue to put out ads with the wrong prices and then claim the product never came in.

The Aldi by me just moved the produce section to the front of the store.
