Back then, there was no federal income tax, and they relied on really high tariffs. Wealthy industrialists like Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Morgan got incredibly rich, while most of the middle and lower classes lived in poverty, dealing with terrible working conditions and exploitation. It was a time of huge wealth for a few and serious struggles for the many. People need to realize, that is the plan. Give businesses unchecked power and leave the rest of us in poverty.
