A comedian’s joke at Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally about Puerto Rico being a “floating island of garbage” has prompted a political backlash with the presidential candidate’s campaign team seeking to distance itself from the controversial remarks.

Speaking to the crowd before Trump took the stage on Sunday, the comedian Tony Hinchcliffe also made crude remarks about Latinos and Jews, all key constituencies in next week’s election.

“I don’t know if you guys know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” he told the crowd to some laughs and a few groans.

I’m Puerto Rican and what offended me the most was how hack that joke was. If you’re gonna be offensive at least be funny.

This is a bad joke in a comedy club, it's a clear and racist message at a presidential campaign rally.

It was a joke that could definitely cost Trump the presidency on November 5th, because thousands of Latino voters are doing an about face thanks to this idiot comedian. From Pennsylvania to Florida one joke opened a flood gate of anger 8 days before the election.

Just not the right place and time, pushed it a bit too far and just felt uncomfortable at best.

Puerto Ricans are NOT choosing their president based off of a Tony Hinchcliffe joke…. It’s INSULTING to imply that 🤦🏽‍♂️.

As a Latino, I’m actually more mad at the people who cheered when he asked where the proud Latinos were than I am that the comment was made in the first place. We’ve known that this is how the maga crowd feel for so long, so it’s not a surprise.. but to hear Latino’s willfully ignore that fact that whatever they are promising them, whatever resonates with their views (religion, family values etc) does not actually INCLUDE them. They are not dreaming of an America with a conservative spin and imagining the Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans as a part of it.. even if we are already here. Even if we’ve been Americans for generations. They’ll thank for being a “Real American” on November 5th, and they’ll say “Now, prove it” in January.
