We should not need extra help, if the state pension was brought into line with other countries there would be no need for pension credit, if the tax allowance for pensioners was raised when a person reaches pensionable age, it would also help those that helped themselves by paying into a personal pension when they were working.

In my younger days I always wondered why pensioners always seemed to be grumpy and miserable, now, as a pensioner I know the reason. You work all your life, manage to scrimp and save a few quid only to see those savings drain away at a rapid rate because the pension is piss poor. For those thinking of retiring, don't do it unless you really, really like poverty.
