I have a mini plasma ball and when I touched it my lamp turns off and on, this is when it is about a foot or two away, but when I plugged my plasma ball into my lamp (it has outlets) it didn’t work, but instead turns off and on a lamp about 5 feet away. Depending on the plasma ball you can turn off and on different electrical equipment through using electromagnetic waves made by the plasma ball. My lamp is made mostly of metal and turns on when you touch it with your fingers, this is why it worked so well. Technically mechanical switches are still possible but much harder. Make a powerful one at home and you could maybe turn off some lights in stores (if portable somehow). You also might need to touch it, preferably tapping on it with 2 fingers that are on the opposite side.
