Why Grand Moff Tarkin Could Give Darth Vader Orders - Star Wars Lore #Shorts

Why was Grand Moff Tarkin able to issue orders to Darth Vader? During the Clone Wars, Palpatine tested Tarkin’s loyalty by sending Count Dooku to see if Tarkin would join the Separatist Alliance. But Tarkin refused, remaining loyal to the Republic and Palpatine. Tarkin’s disdain for the Jedi was no secret. Having fought alongside them as a Republic naval officer, he witnessed their weaknesses and shortcomings. He believed they had failed to maintain peace and requested that Palpatine remove them from the battlefield.

After the formation of the Empire, Tarkin's elimination of numerous rebel cells resulted in his promotion to the rank of Grand Moff with authority over the Outer Rim sectors. While Darth Vader and Tarkin rarely got along, the Emperor made it clear Tarkin was untouchable. Tarkin eventually discovered that Vader was Anakin Skywalker but kept the secret as he admired Vader's ability to induce fear in his enemies.

Let’s not forget that despite keeping the secrecy of Vader being Anakin and hating the Jedi during his time even as an naval officer to the republic he kind of admired Anakin for being the Jedi that the others didn’t want to be. Though Tarkin was absolutely arrogant

Tarkin actually called Vader "His Old Friend" during A New Hope.
The were quite friendly and respectful to each other during the Movie.

Vader once had tarkin hunt him to see how good he'd do in a life or death situation (Vader murdered hundreds of stormtroopers that day)

Tarkin’s respect and loyalty definitely made him a good friend. The way he treats Vader in a New Hope is a fine example. The problem is that, outside of that, he saw flaws in so many others that he failed to see the flaws in people like himself. He wasn’t arrogant, per se, but he did have a tendency to underestimate his opponents.

Actually, Tarkin and Vader have incredibly high regard and levels for respect for each other - not to be confused with affection. This is consistent across both EU and Canon.
