Best Ways to Solder Wires Together - My 4 Easy Goto Methods.

The best ways to solder wires together depends on the size of wire, type of wire, how much working length you have, and application. All that plays a roll in what method/s will work best for you.

Here are my 4 main easy ways to solder join wires together that I've been successfully using for years, both as a tech and hobbyist. I point out the pros and cons of each solder wire splice method as I demonstrate them on different wire.

Wire Splice Time Index:
- Intro 0:00
1. Lap Wire Splice 1:25
2. Lineman's Splice 6:00
3. Strand Wire Splice 8:50
4. Butt Solder Splice 12:18

There are certainly other ways to splice and solder wires together, but I find these 4 will cover most sizes and applications you are likely to run across in radio control modelling, automotive work, HVAC, electronics work, or simple household/garage wiring projects and repairs. They are all fairly easy to master and consistently provide a robust splice.

If you want to know more about the amazing little soldering iron I'm using in this video, here's a link to the review I did on it:

If you're new to soldering and don't know much about it yet, here's a link to my "Soldering For Beginners" page on my website that explains all the basics:

Super helpful video, thank you! I was trying to come up with the best way to splice wires from a multicore cable in a potting box and I think the lap splice will be the best way to go as I don't have a lot of length to work with.

I mounted my "helping hands" to a big washer. It adds weight and stability to it. The washer is 3/16" thick by 3 1/2" diameter. Also, put a felt pad on the bottom.

You do it so easily! I'm a beginner, just trying my first soldering today. When I try to tin the wire, I can hold the iron on the bottom of the wire for 30 seconds or more and hold the solder on top of the wire, but it never gets hot enough to melt the solder. My iron is at 330 C. I started by putting some solder on the tip and wiping it on the sponge, then try to tin the wire, but it doesn't work. I switched to a wider solder tip, but it didn't help. I guess I need a video for the rank beginner!

The Western Union/Linman splice goes back to the 1800's was developed for Telegraph line repair's (solid wire ) but you see it used on stranded too.

Do you have a video on soldering a webcam usb cord? I have had a horrible time trying to strip the tiny wires. Also, what is all the other non-wire metal and weirdly wrapped wires that surround the original wires? I am a nube. I got into wiring the many old lamps in my dads house, then the cats gnawed on my web cam cord… Thanks for your great video!
