The older I get the more fortunate I know I was to have a dad that was an automotive electrician, essentially. Starters, alternators, generator rebuilds were his specialty but anything automotive electric-related was his game, the guy could resolder starter armature windings. Needless to say, I was shown the right way to solder countless times, including what it should and shouldn't look like, and why. He also showed me how to sweat a pipe once too, thanks dad.
