Dead island 1 had a better atmosphere
You can drive a car
And its more nostalgia overall
And the gore in the 1st game is more better than Dead island 2

Dead Island 1 has better tone and atmosphere, Dead Island 2 has better gameplay.

Dead Island 1 was trying to be serious, dark and atmospheric, but it was viewed as "comedic" just because of some of the glitches (especially in co-op) that could lead to funny moments. The devs of Dead Island 2 didn't seem to understand that.

graphics held up pretty nice! too bad game storyline was thin as shit and that the same heavies kept spawning in some places even you just cleared them

Dead Island 1 + RT had better combat, since the physics worked way different before the definitive edition released. You used to be able to run and kick zombies and they flew back when playing as John, the heavy attacks against the Infected were amazing since the physics basically had them run full force into Gabriel's Sledgehammer, dealing more catastrophic limb damage.
