Utah family and doctors, fight insurance over ‘medically necessary’ care for teenager

A Coalville family says an emergency surgery helped save their son’s life. Yet, their insurance company denied coverage saying the procedure was not medically necessary. Left owing tens-of-thousands of dollars, the family decided to Get Gephardt.

Sounds like Utah insurance. My grandma had to go to court after my mom died cuz of bogus insurance claims and luckily won but of course it took years. Saying "they don't care" is an understatement.

My mom works for insurance company and for a hospital. She was a NICU nurse for 30 years. And then she was a caseworker for an insurance company. You need to tell the doctor you're not going to pay for it. And you need to tell him the reason you're not paying for it it's because if it wasn't medically necessary then he shouldn't have been there. The doctor supposed to get approval from the insurance company before they approve any more days. Because they did not get approval and because the insurance company is refusing to pay you tell the doctor that you're not paying it. You need to also find out if the insurance company told the doctor ahead of time that they weren't going to approve it and if they didn't then you need to tell the insurance company that they need to pay it. Either way it's not your responsibility one person or the other needs to take care of it

Our healthcare is so stupid as it stands. No one knows what all these bills are for. You go to the hospital and you get so many separate bills. And so many doctors come into your room and bill you even if they stay only for a couple of minutes.
