👋Welcome to Autism From The Inside!!!

If you're autistic or think you or someone you love might be on the autism spectrum, this channel is for you!
I'm Paul Micallef, and I discovered my own autism at age 30.

Yes, I know, I don't look autistic. That's exactly why I started this channel in the first place because if I didn't show you, you would never know.

Autism affects many (if not all!) aspects of our lives, so on this channel, I want to show you what Autism looks like in real people and give you some insight into what's happening for us on the inside. We'll break down myths and misconceptions, discuss how to embrace autism and live well, and share what it's like to be an autistic person.

Join me as I share what I've found along my journey, so you don't have to learn it the hard way.

Make sure to subscribe so you won’t miss my new video every Friday and some bonus content thrown in mid-week too.

👋Connect with me:

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy my channel!

Peace,

~ Paul

I have Asperger's (now just autism apparently) and both my kids have autism.
We've developed an amazing way of keeping behaviors in check with simple trial and error over time. My son is non verbal but is so creative in the way he communicates with me. My daughter is verbal and has a lot of cognitive issues but we make it work. They are 14 and 12 respectively.
I listen to them. They listen to me. We rarely have conflict. We stick with routines and try to minimize stress. It's of course still a challenge but they've always been able to be themselves and we all just work on being constructive about learning life skills and coping skills. My life and my struggles over time has helped them in that I can empathize with them on a unique level.
Both my kids sleep through the night and always have (rare) because I've never deviated from bedtime routines. They never tell me no if they understand what I'm asking them to do.
All anyone with autism needs is to feel respected, be communicated with as much as possible, and have their opinions matter regardless of their age.
They learn so much on their own this way and don't feel like they're being forced to change or be someone they aren't.
I would never want my kids to change. They are incredible exactly as they are.
I never even considered ABA because I knew we could understand and work with one another.

Scishow is normally good, especially when dealing with known controversial subjects like this. I am legitimately surprised such a line actually made it in the episode.

I love how you did the loop in this short! Also, I agree with what you said.

Thanks for making your ABA critique a YT 'short'

ABA is NOT evidence based though, and it FAILS (!):
-Short term goals
-Long term goals
-Compliance based (removes discernment leading us to be taken advantage of!)
-FAILED multiple gov and military studies
-FAILED METASTUDY.

I so agree - and while I may reach those who disagree with me, I don’t believe we need to be “fixed” I don’t believe we are broken

🖖Have been a Proud Nerdfighter for over a Decade🖖 ❤ Have never felt the judgment, lableing or persecution from the community that seems to be coming across in the SciShow video. On the contrary, have often felt recognized, applauded & accepted BECAUSE of my differences. Seemed to me, the majority of VlogBrother's community fell outside society's norm in many ways, including the Brothers themselves.
This is the first time I have been Disappointed in a video by the Green Brothers & wonder if it represents their personal view or was Hank reading a script he didn't necessarily understand or agree with?
Could it just be a sign of how big Sci Show has become or maybe an honest case of ignorance, outdated science and lack of understanding?
That Hank would prepetuate, continued & put in an EDUCATIONAL VIDEO; Blatent lies (like ABA being anything other than torture to conform) let alone the judgements of Autism or Neurodivergence as ESSENTIALLY SICK, Degenerative &"BAD" was a big surprise as much as it was INSULTING & HEARTBREAKING ...and quite possibly life threatening for some 💔 😢
Sending ALL MY NEURODIVERGENT FAMILY ❤🧡💛💚💜💖
Great STRENGTH, Gratitude & Appreciation, Big Blessings, BRAVERY & Love, Many Mercies, JUSTICE & Joy,  All the COURAGE, Compassion & Luck🍀🙏✌🏽✊🏽❤
May All be free from Suffering

The suggestion that people on the spectrum need to have their behaviour changed etc is ridiculous. I try to be aware of my actions and tell my son to try and do the same. But to say "change a, b, c" is a not starter. Imagine suggesting that a person of colour should change their skin so that their life will become rainbows. That is just as crazy as it would be offensive.

I am trying to highlight to trainers at my work that it is not me who needs to improve my communication skills but others who need to be more clear

the fact that #SciShow made this claim horrifies me. the level of abuse i grew up with to "change my behavior" only taught me to mask, not to trust, and that i'm the only one i have in my life to take care of me and to trust...and i can't even trust my own judgment because i grew up with so much abuse and gaslighting.

I am neurotypical and just started my journey into learning about autism 3 months ago. I actually have been researching jobs working in the autism world. One requirement I have seen is having a knowledge of applied behavior analysis (ABA). I didn't know what this was so I researched it. On its face it made sense enough, but I said to myself:

"Hey wait a second! If comforming + complinace = masking, doesent ABA just set up a child to have issues with masking in their adult life? Shouldn't ABA be applied more so to the parents, or teachers?"

Could anyone share their thoughts on this?

To me, what I have heard about ABA is that it sounds like a form of conversion therapy and that is so awful! Luckily, it's not a practise in my country and I was also diagnozed autistic by the age of 33. Told my counselor about ABA and she seemed chocked, telling me that trying to make autistic children neurotypical is not how things should be done! She's a wise woman and I am grateful for having good support, even though my own special needs are not that intense ❤

Yes it bothers me so much that this statement was made😟 and I really like Hank, I hope someone messages him asking him to research and correct the misinformation

Such a misleading statement. Thanks Paul 🙌🏼

I think even the term intervention is troubling. Perhaps neurotypicals, who are still the majority (and botching the world up pretty obviously) should start adapting to us on the spectrum, at least accepting that the old mindsets have led humanity nowhere.

It is almost the only recognized or funded treatment for lack of a better word.

Can't agree more. ❤❤❤ very true. My list is,
Sensory integration therapy, primitive reflex integration,
Speech therapy
It covers almost all areas

Rather the question is, why does he want ABA to be seen as the way to go.
